Hello, movie lovers! Today I'm sharing my review of a four-episode miniseries called Mis muertos tristes.
Trama - Plot
La historia sigue a Ema, una médica jubilada que puede escuchar y ver a los muertos, aparte de hablar con ellos. Vive en la casa de su madre junto a ella, que ya está muerta pero la sigue cuidando porque no quiere irse. Hasta que su hermana viene de visita y descubre que su sobrina tiene el mismo don que ella, solo que más carnal. Todo cambia a raíz de esto, y junto con la vida en un barrio marginal azotado por la delincuencia empiezan a suceder hechos extraños, y la línea entre los vivos y los muertos se hace cada vez más difusa.
The story follows Ema, a retired doctor who can hear and see the dead, as well as talk to them. She lives in her mother’s house with her—her mother, who is already dead but continues to look after her because she doesn’t want to leave. That is, until her sister comes to visit and discovers that her niece has the same gift as she does—only more visceral. Everything changes as a result, and against the backdrop of life in a crime-ridden inner-city neighborhood, strange events begin to unfold, and the line between the living and the dead grows increasingly blurred.

Una miniserie de 4 episodios llena de drama social mezclado con hechos sobrenaturales. La verdad es que quedé sorprendida para bien, la producción logra transmitir ese lado opaco y lúgubre de vivir en un ambiente marginal, y las historias que nos cuentan pueden ser tan perturbadoras como tristes.
A four-episode miniseries full of social drama mixed with supernatural elements. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised—the production successfully conveys the bleak and gloomy side of life in a marginalized community, and the stories it tells can be as unsettling as they are sad.
Me sorprendí sintiendo pena y empatía más de una vez, y hasta les diría que me paso más con los muertos que con los vivos. Por momentos hay hechos muy duros que cuesta digerir porque no deja de ser la vida misma de personas que tienen pocos recursos y les cuesta salir de allí, de esos lugares consumidos por la delincuencia y las drogas.
I was surprised to find myself feeling sorrow and empathy more than once, and I’d even say it happens to me more often with the dead than with the living. At times, there are very difficult realities that are hard to come to terms with because they are, after all, the very lives of people with few resources who struggle to escape from those places consumed by crime and drugs.
No sé si simpatice tanto con los protagonistas, podía llegar a entender a Ema, una mujer ya grande que tuvo que vivir con ese don oculto para no ser tratada como loca, entonces se hace la desentendida en el asunto hasta que siente que es momento de ayudar, pero luego se la cuestiona de que la ayuda que brinda es para los muertos en vez de para los vivos. También vivió hechos muy cuestionables y esto hace que sea bastante dura hasta con su propia familia, tiene una relación algo áspera con su hija.
I’m not sure if I really relate to the main characters. I could understand Ema—an older woman who had to live with this hidden gift so she wouldn’t be treated like a crazy person—so she pretends not to know anything about it until she feels it’s time to help, but then she’s questioned about whether the help she offers is for the dead rather than the living. She’s also been through some very troubling experiences, and this makes her quite harsh—even toward her own family; she has a somewhat strained relationship with her daughter.
También tenemos a Julie, una joven que no oculta su don, pero que sí es juzgada y tratada como psicótica, aunque ningún tratamiento funciona porque lo de ella no es mental, es algo espiritual que la gente no entiende, ni siquiera sus padres, hasta que ya es demasiado tarde. Julie puede ser un personaje bastante grotesco al principio, pero esencial para la trama porque a partir de su visita empiezan a empeorar las cosas, y llegan a un punto de no retorno en algunos aspectos.
Then there’s Julie, a young woman who doesn’t hide her gift, but who is judged and treated as if she were psychotic—even though no treatment works because her condition isn’t mental; it’s something spiritual that people don’t understand, not even her parents, until it’s already too late. Julie may come across as a rather grotesque character at first, but she’s essential to the plot because things start to get worse after her visit, and in some ways, they reach a point of no return.
A mí lo que más me impactó es la manera de mezclar hechos de violencia, robos y asesinatos con hechos sobrenaturales. Entonces es una miniserie que da miedo, pero no tanto por el tema de los muertos, sino por todo el trasfondo que hay detrás, por las muertes traumáticas de estas personas y por lo que sigue azotando las calles de ese barrio. Hay toda una problemática social difícil de solucionar a raíz de lo que nos cuentan y eso termina siendo lo aterrador.
What struck me the most was the way it blends acts of violence, robberies, and murders with supernatural events. So it’s a scary miniseries, but not so much because of the deaths themselves, but because of the whole backdrop behind them—the traumatic deaths of these people and what continues to plague the streets of that neighborhood. There’s a whole social problem that’s hard to solve based on what we’re told, and that’s ultimately what’s so terrifying.
Es una miniserie muy interesante que les recomiendo ver. Ideal para esta época porque les va a erizar los pelos, pero no por los sustos, sino por lo dramática y cruel que puede llegar a ser. Además cuenta con un gran elenco, y es ideal para ver de un tirón porque es corta dentro de todo. Está más que recomendada por mi parte.
It's a really interesting miniseries that I recommend you watch. It's perfect for this time of year because it'll give you goosebumps—not because of the scares, but because of just how dramatic and cruel it can be. It also has a great cast, and it's perfect for binge-watching since it's relatively short. I highly recommend it.
