Not many baseball fans know the real story behind the rebranding of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to the Tampa Bay Rays back in 2007. Religious groups were breathing down ownership's neck because "Devils," even though it just meant the marine creature, carried a bad vibe, and the local church wasn't having it in such a traditional town. Don't sleep on it, even if Florida is all about beaches and sunny weather, it’s a deeply conservative state. That's when they trimmed it to "Rays," flipping the script to honor the sunshine beaming over the Gulf of Mexico. But here's the kicker: the owner played chess, keeping the manta ray on the jersey, using its tail to underline the city's name on the threads. And you better believe it, yesterday they walked into Progressive Field and stung the Cleveland Guardians in a 7-3 ballgame.

This ties up the ALCS at two games apiece, giving the Rays huge breathing room since it guarantees the series heads back to the Trop to wrap things up. The keys to the ballgame? There were a few, but the biggest one: the heart of their order—Jhonatan Aranda, Junior Caminero, and Yandy Díaz—caught fire right when the squad needed them most. The Mexican slugger Aranda went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, the Cuban infielder Díaz went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, and the Dominican phenom Caminero went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Between the three of them, they drove in 5 of the Rays' 7 runs, showing just how heavy their bats carry this offense. Without them, Tampa's lineup simply has no gas, making this hard-fought tie a direct result of their heavy hitting.

But it wasn't just about the bats, as a couple of costly boots by the Cleveland defense helped blow their chances of taking the ballgame. Everybody knows that in October baseball, playing clean defense is absolutely critical. Toss in a stellar outing on the bump by Miami-born starter Nick Martínez, who tossed 5.1 frames of two-hit ball, giving up just one run, walking two, and sitting down three on strikes, and you get the full picture of how they drew it up. The Tampa bullpen, outside of Ian Seymour getting tagged for a bit, slammed the door shut and kept them on lockdown. The Guardians' pitching staff was playing from behind all night against the fish, as 5 of the 7 arms trotted out by Cleveland got touched up for at least one run, and you just can't win like that. Suddenly, all those heavy innings caught up to the Guardians' bullpen, and with zero off-days left in the series, that wear and tear is a major problem. Just like that, the momentum is starting to shift right back to Tampa.
Seguimos.

Now the Guardians might be the ones against the ropes despite the series deadlock. The reason? Drew Rasmussen takes the bump for Tampa tonight, and he completely locked them down in Game 1 despite taking a tough-luck loss. Meanwhile, the Guardians are countering with a shaky Parker Messick, who is still hunting for his first postseason W. If Cleveland wants a real shot at taking the series, today is a must-win game so they can play for a split back at the Trop. Otherwise, if Tampa takes care of business at 8:00 PM ET inside Progressive Field and secures tonight's ballgame, they’ll head back to their home turf with all the leverage. If that happens, we are highly likely to see a World Series matchup that is not only unprecedented but features two franchises chasing their first-ever championship ring. Who needs a massive payroll? Just look at two small-market squads dealing their way to the Fall Classic. We’ll dive deeper into that the second we get a chance. Stay tuned.
