Girl with a Pearl Earring - Acrylic Paintg on Banknote [ENG-ESP]

Sin título19.jpg

Hello, dear friends. I hope you’ve had a great weekend—especially this beautiful Sunday. Today, I’d like to share a classic work from art history: Girl with a Pearl Earring, also known as Girl with a Turban. This painting is the work of Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch artist renowned for his detailed, serene depictions of everyday domestic life—a setting from which Girl with a Pearl Earring emerges, radiating the beauty of the mundane. It features a profound gaze, with the pearl itself serving as one of the focal points of this exquisite piece. I’ve created this version in a small format, using a banknote as my canvas and applying acrylic paints with vibrant pigments to try and capture a bit of the master’s essence. I hope you enjoy it.

PROCESS

On a banknote in good condition, I began by applying a base layer of white paint; upon this layer, I painted the silhouette of the painting’s subject. Once the paint had dried thoroughly, I used an ordinary pencil to sketch out the details—defining the outlines first, and then filling in the features within the face, such as the eyes and lips. I followed the same process for the large turban worn by the young woman.

Next, I begin mixing the paints needed to achieve the skin tone of this lovely young lady. Since the skin is not uniform—featuring areas with shadows—the contrast must be moderate. Using this base tone, I can then adjust the lightness or darkness, transitioning from the areas where the light hits to where the shadows are most pronounced. I mix white with scarlet red, yellow ochre, and brown. I start with a large amount of white, gradually adding the other colors until the right tone emerges. Once it’s ready, I use a very fine brush to paint the rest of the figure, and in the same way, I also apply the color for the lips.

Then, in a second layer of paint, the tones are darkened slightly toward the right side of the painting—as the light becomes more scarce in that area—while a lighter tone is added to the left side. Through this combination, the face begins to take on the desired volume; the same applies to the turban, which is blue and features a contrast between lighter and darker sections. For these darker areas, I incorporate navy blue mixed with purple to achieve a more effective darkening effect.

Even though it is a small drawing, I like to leave visible brushstrokes; I feel that this is the personal mark an artist leaves on a painting. And even when I am creating a work based on another artist’s piece, I try to infuse it with a personal touch through my brushwork. I let the acrylic paint dry just enough so that, as I pass the brush over the banknote, it leaves a distinct, raised texture. I am now adding the final details—defining the glint in the eyes and the pearl worn on the ear. And with that, it is finished.

What do you think of the result? There wasn’t enough room left on the banknote to include the part of the turban that falls down her back; nevertheless, most of this beautiful work of art was captured. Were you familiar with this lovely painting by Johannes Vermeer? It’s always a good idea to explore art history and learn from the great masters. I hope you enjoyed my work—I look forward to returning soon. Blessings to all!
