Drawing of Thomas Shelby: Sketch on a Receipt [ENG-ESP]

Hello, dear friends at Hive DIY; I hope you are all doing well and enjoying good health. I’ve been through some very stressful hours lately due to power outages—which now exceed six hours a day—making for a truly difficult situation; nevertheless, I haven't stopped creating art in one form or another. This time, I want to share a simple sketch I made of Thomas Shelby, the protagonist of Peaky Blinders—one of the best series of recent times. Using nothing but ink and a ballpoint pen, I captured the face of this enigmatic character on a piece of receipt paper; the text in the background adds a modern, urban touch. I’ll briefly walk you through the process, step by step. Let’s get started!

Hola queridos amigos de Hive Diy, espero que se encuentren muy bien y gozando de muy buena salud. He pasado horas muy estresantes debido a los cortes de luz, los cuales ya superan las 6 horas al día, realmente es una situación difícil, sin embargo, no dejo de producir arte de cualquier forma. En esta oportunidad quiero mostrarles un sencillo boceto que hice del personaje de Thomas Shelby, protagonista de una de las mejores series de los últimos tiempos, los Peaky Blinders. En esta oportunidad, utilizando simplemente tinta y un bolígrafo logró realizar el rostro de este enigmático personaje, el cual utiliza como lienzo un papel de compra, las letras al fondo le da un toque moderno y urbano. De una forma breve les mostraré cómo fue el proceso, detalladamente paso a paso. ¡Comenzamos!

Thomas Shelby is no stranger to my interest in drawing him; in fact, I’ve depicted him in various ways before. This time, however, I wanted to capture him on paper using a style I really enjoy. I started with a graphite pencil, attempting to lay down the initial sketch lines for his face, but I only completed a small section before deciding to try using ink directly, bypassing the preliminary sketch. So, I picked up the pen and continued drawing straight onto the page, using circular strokes and seemingly random lines to establish the initial forms.

Thomas Shelby no ha sido ajeno a mi interés por dibujarlo, de hecho ya lo he realizado antes en diferentes formas, así que esta vez quise llevarlo a este simple papel pero que me gusta mucho el estilo. Comencé con lápiz de grafito, tratando de hacer las líneas iniciales para el boceto en todo el rostro, pero solo hice una pequeña parte, ya que de pronto quise probar la tinta directamente sin seguir el trazo de un boceto previo. Así que tomé el bolígrafo y continué dibujando directamente, utilizando los trazos circulares y rayas sin sentido para ir dando las primeras formas.

Once confidence takes hold of my hand, I simply let it flow freely alongside my imagination, allowing the features to emerge little by little. A sketch is easy, as it consists of overlapping lines that provide an initial concept. Here, I rely primarily on those overlapping lines to build the form; that is how the face gradually comes into view—particularly the eyes, nose, and lips.

Una vez la confianza ha llegado a mi mano, solo debo dejar que se vaya sola junto a la imaginación, para que las partes vayan saliendo poco a poco. Un boceto es fácil, ya que son líneas superpuestas que nos dan una idea inicial. Aquí utilizo principalmente las líneas superpuestas para darle forma, es así como va apareciendo poco a poco el rostro, especialmente los ojos, nariz y labios.

As for the series, it spans several seasons, and various famous actors have made their mark in certain episodes—such as Tom Brady, one of the main antagonists facing Thomas Shelby and his brothers. What I like most about the show is its setting: that uncertain interwar period when economic instability drove people to all sorts of illegal activities just to survive.

Hablando de la serie, tiene varias temporadas, y en algunos capítulos han aparecido otros actores famosos que han dejado su huella, como por ejemplo Tom Brady, uno de los antagonistas principales de Thomas Shelby y sus hermanos. Lo que más me gusta de esta serie es su ambientación, aquel periodo incierto de entre guerras donde la incertidumbre por la economía empujaba a las personas a toda clase de cosas ilegales con tal de poder sobrevivir.

Although I employ a scribbling technique, I use different types of ink to achieve a better finish and create a sense of volume in each drawing. Once the pen's ink supply is running low, the tip produces finer lines. Conversely, when I need to accentuate shadows on the face, I switch to a marker with a slightly broader tip that covers more area and allows for darker shading. This approach enables me to render hair—darkening it and adding volume while preserving highlights that define its flow—as well as to capture the shadows created by the contours of the face. That is how the drawing is completed.

Aunque utilizo la técnica de dibujar con garabatos, uso difernetes tipos de tinta para logra run mejor acabado y un volumen aceptable para cada dibujo. Una vez que ya he utilizado la mayor parte la tinta del bolígrafo, como la punta es más finas, las líneas quedan más delgadas. Por el contrario, cuando necesito acentuar alguna sombra en el rostro utilizo otro marcador con la punta un poco más ancha, que cubra más espacio y permita oscurecer. Es así como por ejemplo, puedo hacer el cabello, oscurecerlo y darle volumen mientras que quedan reflejos de luz que indican como va el cabello, así también en las sombras generada spor el relieve en su rostro. De esta manera ha quedado finalizado.

What do you think of the result? I believe I’ve captured that look of disdain and utter indifference that Thomas Shelby often directs at those around him. One of the aspects of this gangster I admire most is his ability to negotiate and handle situations requiring calculation, cunning, and ice-cold composure—qualities his brothers lack. He remains silent and analytical, speaking only when the situation truly calls for it. I hope you enjoyed my contribution; I really loved creating it. ¿Qué les ha parecido el resultado? creo que he captado esa mirada despectiva y cargada de indiferencia que Thomas Shelby suele lanzar a las personas que lo rodean. Una de las facetas que más me gustan de este gangster es su habilidad para negociar y manejar la situación cuando se requiere cálculo, astucia y hielo en las venas, mientras que sus hermanos son lo contrario, el siempre permanece en silencio, analizando, y solo sentencia cuando la situación lo amerita.
