My new approach to autovoting

My new approach to autovoting

I've been registered on Hive over 6 years and during those years I've built up my Hive Power. Last week I even reached the Orca status 🎉 Being a somewhat larger stakeholder does make me feel that I should use my voting power more responsibly. Of course, manual voting is the best thing to do. And only on the posts that you have actually read. But unfortunately I don't have the time to do that. And I think I'm not the only one that has that problem. I manually upvote posts I read, but for the rest I use autovoting.

For a long time I've followed a couple of curation trails from different curation projects. These projects do valuable work. I know that very well, because I have one myself; @topcomment. The curators of these projects search for quality content to upvote. By following their voting trail, you just upvote everything they have upvoted.

But.... by doing this you give away control of your upvotes. When checking my voting activities I sometimes noticed posts being upvoted which I wouldn't have upvoted myself.

Inspired by posts from @slobberchops and @costanza where they explained how they configured their autovotes, I started thinking how I could implement something like this for myself.

My new approach

I was already using the autovote feature of PeakD, but, as I mentioned earlier, I had a few trails of curation services I followed. I have removed those trails (except for my own @topcomment trail) and did a search in my following list for users I wanted to add on the list.

To select users, I've created some guidelines for myself. These are guidelines, so I allow myself to deviate from my own principles sometimes 😂

Quality The account I select need to have a high standard in their content. If an account is mostly postsing game updates or actifit posts, they don't qualify.

Contributors I prefer to support people who contribute to the community rather than simply take from it. Although for some people this is controversial, I do check the KE value for this.

Rewards I generally avoid accounts that already receive big rewards on their posts all the time. I want my rewards to go to the authors that are not top earners on Hive.

Personal interest I want to support blogs that genuinely interest me.

For now, these are my rules, but I might adjust these after a while. For me this is just a starting point.

I've started out with selecting accounts and have selected 24 to autovote (25 with @topcomment) autovotes.png

I had set the value to 50% at first, but I noticed that my voting power was heading towards 90%, so I increased the percentage to 75%.

Keeping my list clean

To keep some control over my autovotes, I have created a separate list in PeakD containing all the accounts I added to my autovote list. My plan is to scroll through this list regularly to check if there are accounts that no longer meet my guidelines, so I can keep a clean list. And I won't remove an account when they make one shitpost, but when the it is structural, they will be removed.

Thanks for reading. How are you spending your HP? Do you delegate a lot? Do you manually upvote posts? And then after you have read them or 'blind'? Are you following curation trails like I did? And what do you think about my approach?

Let me know in the comments!

It’s great that you have your own criteria for voting. Personally, I don’t like voting for users who don’t even interact with others on their own posts—I find that really poor form.

I saw this post at https://rozioogames.com/?town=1&lang=en

It’s interesting to interact on Hive and discover other people’s work; I invite you to get involved! I personally love participating and supporting the work of others.

I havne't done them for ages and ages, but follow your criteria pretty much. I will go and update them now at your behest - including @topcomment, which I think is a worthy feature. I try not to autovote those who get top rewards too. But there's plenty of times I dont get chance to vote that day and my votes are wasted - just been slack about doing it and to be fair on myself, I didn't even know autovote was on Peakd, which makes it so much easier than the way we used to do it.

  • Going from 50% to 75% because voting power was climbing toward 90% is such a practical detail, and scrolling through the list now and then to keep it clean sounds like the part most people would skip.

I sometimes also think it would be good to do auto-votes because sometimes there’s just no time to read articles, and over time, you can see who’s writing quality content. But a lot of the time, I find newbies who are good but still need to read articles because, over time, they just give up, and there are no more quality articles. I recommend @josediccus to you… He’s doing a great job, but I still have a feeling he isn’t recognized enough…

It's really good to set guidelines, even for ourselves, because they help us easily identify which posts deserve our upvotes based on the criteria we've established.

Manual curation is the best approach, but it does take quite a lot of time and effort.

My current strategy is to follow some quality content creators, then take some time each day to check my feed and upvote their posts.

  • Thanks 🤝

Ok now I get why you asked for that feature at Hive Raven! I was spending a bit of time in my new project; I will see if I can start that by the end of the week! I also need to close an article for work lol

  • Someone posting WHAT they do and HOW they do it and WHY they do it.. it's refreshing. Keep up the work Moose!

Hitting orca and rethinking your voting habits at that size is a solid move.

Thank you for this detailed explanation of what autovotes are and how they work. I have one question as a still inexperienced member. Would it be useful for me now to follow some voting trail or choose users myself as you do via PeakD, whose content I already know I like, or is it better to just keep voting individually as I have been doing so far? I am asking because my profile is still quite small with not that much hive power.

Thanks for the post. Explain to me something you follow a trail of @topcomment . I don't find the autovote on peakd.

I wasn't aware of peakd autovote feature. Will check it out, thanks I am using hive.vote, that allows to me add user accounts to be voted automatically if above voting power limit.
