Orangey sunrise

On Wednesday morning I was up at 5:15AM and got my post up. I cleaned up the kitchen and then headed to the garden. I had to get sprinklers going and never got started until 7:30AM. It was still cool but the humidity was rising.

I finished off the sugar pea row left from Monday then worked my way down the Walla onion rows. The comfrey had a lot of dead in it so I pulled that out. It’s starting to go by for the year.

There’s a parsley row and the critter had chewed the roots of 3 of the plants. They were still unwilted, so I brought them inside to process. There was 1 plant left.

I was of 2 minds about the squashes so I went behind them to work.

The cukes had nothing on them, so I thought. But when I went to pull them out, I found a vine had gone into the horseradish and had some huge ones and smaller ones on it.

I cleaned the dead stuff out of the horseradish and pulled up some of the smaller roots that were invading. The rhubarb didn’t need much attention. It’s the best I’ve seen it in decades. It had a rocky start because something had chewed the roots during the winter.

By the time I got that mess cleaned up, the humidity got me. I only had ½ of the last section to do, but I couldn’t breathe well so I quit. I got my photos and made my notes and got cleaned up.

I collected well over a dozen drop apples and headed inside.

Wednesday’s harvest

I got a shower and sat down for a while. Once I could breathe again, I made an early lunch. I’d intended to process the parsley but I was suddenly very tired and went to bed and slept 3 hours.

I got up and read the rest of the day until bedtime. Because I’d slept so long, I didn’t get to bed until 9:30PM.

On Thursday, I hope to finish the Big garden. It’s to be hot and humid, mid 80’s so I need to get out there early. My #4 helper is coming early afternoon and I will harvest broccoli to freeze. There’s a trip to the Survival center and a couple errands for her to do. I also have a few chores for her.

The pests that attack your celery plants also often attack chili plants, I use insecticide to eradicate them.

  • We got rain yesterday but the humidity is going to break this afternoon. Our cukes are running down too. Have to run up to Burlington and pick up my son and fiance at the airport later this morning. We will probably shop a little and go to lunch. That will probably be all we get done today.
