Small garden - tomatoes
On Thursday morning I spent most of it getting caught up on posts. Then I finished the laundry and put it all away and cleaned up the kitchen. I sat and made a couple big orders online and then waited until 1:30PM when my #4 helper arrived.
I’d not been outside to harvest anything in 4 days and I knew there were huge squash out there. The tomatoes were red in places so I figured there were enough for making the tomato soup base.

Celery harvest October 2024
It had been a couple years since I’d had a decent celery harvest. It was looking pretty good this year so I planned to make a lot of dried celery slurry for celery salt.
When my #4 helper arrived, I sent her out to the garden to harvest stuff. First she got the tomatoes. We decided to cut them up to see how much there were. We got 10 cups so now we knew how much celery and onions to harvest.
So she went back out to finish harvesting.

A lot of the squash were way too big and went into compost. You can see on the zucchini that something has been nibbling on them, the summer squash, and the cukes.

She had gotten too much celery so I processed the tops to make slurry and she took home the extra stalks. I spent the afternoon processing them while she prepped the soup.

We finally got the base going on the stove. It had to simmer for an hour so she cleaned up while I got the Walla onions that were extra sliced for the dehydrator.

I got 3 trays of slurry and 3 trays of onions going in the dehydrator.

She went and ran a couple errands while it cooked. When it finished I left it to cool and started some meatballs and squash for supper.

When she got back, we went to the cellar and got the Squeezo and some freezer boxes. We ran the base through the Squeeze 3 or 4 times until the leavings were dry.
But it was too watery so I put it on the stove to cook down some. She finished the clean up and had to go. She took the celery, a huge cuke, and some squash with her.
I sat down to supper, fed the cat and when the base had cooked down, turned it off to cool. Then I went in and watched a movie until bedtime at 8PM. I put the base in the fridge to deal with on Friday.
I had to open the house up as it’s to be low 80’s on Friday and humid.
On Friday I have to unload the dehydrator, put the base in freezer containers and get it into the freezers, somewhere. The kitchen needs cleaned up, I have to do the milk order before my #2 intern arrives at 8AM. We are going out and unload the hay from the truck and then fix fences. I’ve got to put the Squeezo away and wash up the onion and celery trays for the dehydrator.
At 12:30PM my #3 helper comes and I’m planning on processing the kohlrabi or what’s left of it.
So another busy day…
