How Much We Know About Our Health - Initiativee. Invito a participar a @belkyscabrera y @ramisey.

Greetings, dear friends at @hiveargentina. I’m back in this wonderful community to take part in another interesting initiative: How Much Do We Know About Our Health - Initiative. I invite @belkyscabrera and @ramisey to participate.

Health is my priority, as well as that of those in my care. It’s very important to understand that going to the doctor isn’t an obligation per se—we shouldn’t only go for a checkup when we feel sick. Timely treatment can save our lives, which is why routine checkups are necessary to prevent and address any health issues. Going to the doctor without symptoms shouldn’t be seen as an expense—it’s an investment. In my case, I get routine checkups. In fact, a few months ago I had some tests done and my uric acid level came back a little high, so I had to cut foods high in purines out of my diet. If I hadn’t had this test, I would have continued eating foods that raise this level and made things worse.

Years ago, I was diagnosed with fibrocystic disease, so I’m careful not to drink coffee or eat processed meats and canned foods to prevent this condition from getting worse. Although I don’t experience any pain, I get my annual checkup without hesitation—and I mean that even though the doctor’s visits aren’t cheap. I always thank God for the good results on the tests my doctor orders. To take care of my health, I eat healthy meals and exercise most of the time. Since I know my family’s medical history, I avoid making the same mistakes—my father smoked when he was young and developed pulmonary emphysema, but neither I nor my brother inherited that bad habit of smoking.

I may treat common ailments, such as the flu, with over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or a trusted cough syrup; however, I also know when I need to see a specialist because I shouldn’t self-medicate. A few years ago, my fingernails started lifting—it was the first time this had happened to me. I thought it was a fungal infection, so I made the mistake of buying some pills. After two days, I saw no improvement, so I went to see a dermatologist. I received the proper treatment and cured the condition—which, by the way, turned out to be onycholysis.

Health is the most important thing we have because it allows us to live a good quality of life. That’s why it’s essential to get routine checkups and see a doctor at the first sign of any symptoms—even if they seem insignificant, they could be an important warning sign. I’d like to share a story with you: my neighbor developed a lump on her thigh—it started out small. She didn’t go to the doctor—perhaps she thought it was nothing serious—but the lump grew and started to hurt. This made it difficult for her to walk, so she finally decided to see a doctor. She underwent surgery, but they found cancer and had to amputate her entire leg. Three months after the surgery, she was still suffering; she never recovered and eventually died.

My neighbor's case has stayed with me forever and serves as a lesson I will never forget. As a final thought, I would like to add that we must not ignore our bodies; health is our greatest treasure.
