La flor de papel
Hay plantas que uno termina asociando tanto con un lugar que ya forman parte del paisaje sin que nos detengamos demasiado a mirarlas. En Cuba, la flor de papel es una de ellas. Es fácil encontrarla trepando por una pared, cubriendo una cerca o creciendo en algún rincón donde parece haber decidido quedarse.
Tengo varias fotografías de estas flores y, al revisarlas, me llamó la atención algo muy sencillo: la mayoría son blancas, aunque también tengo algunas rosadas. La planta es la misma, pero el aspecto cambia bastante dependiendo del color y de la manera en que la luz cae sobre ella.
Las blancas tienen algo que me gusta especialmente. Quizás porque parecen más discretas, aunque cuando están juntas pueden llenar completamente una planta y convertirse en lo primero que uno mira. Algunas aparecen casi completamente abiertas y otras todavía están recogidas, formando pequeños grupos que parecen de papel, de ahí ese nombre tan conocido.
Las rosadas, en cambio, tienen una presencia diferente. El color hace que destaquen más, incluso cuando aparecen entre muchas hojas. Me gusta tener fotografías de ambos tonos porque, aunque pertenecen a la misma planta, cada una transmite una sensación distinta.
Lo curioso es que muchas veces paso junto a ellas sin detenerme. Están tan presentes en nuestro entorno que se vuelven parte de lo cotidiano. Solo cuando llevo el móvil en la mano y decido fotografiarlas empiezo a fijarme en detalles que normalmente dejo pasar: una flor que está más abierta que las demás, otra que recibe directamente el sol, una pequeña sombra entre los pétalos o la manera en que varias flores se agrupan en una misma rama.
También me gusta que no sean flores especialmente delicadas en apariencia. Crecen con bastante libertad y pueden ocupar espacios grandes, extendiéndose por muros y jardines. Tienen una belleza que no parece necesitar demasiados cuidados para hacerse notar.
Quizás por eso sigo fotografiándolas.
No porque cada fotografía tenga que contar una historia diferente, sino porque una misma planta puede verse distinta cada vez que uno se detiene a observarla. A veces cambia la luz, otras veces cambia el ángulo y, en ocasiones, simplemente somos nosotros quienes estamos mirando de otra manera.
Entre tantas fotografías, las flores blancas siguen siendo mis favoritas.
Tal vez porque tienen esa forma tranquila de llamar la atención sin pedirla.

The Paper Flower
There are plants that we associate so strongly with a place that they become part of the landscape without us really stopping to look at them. In Cuba, the paper flower is one of them. It is easy to find it climbing along a wall, covering a fence, or growing in some corner where it seems to have decided to stay.
I have several photographs of these flowers and, while looking through them, something very simple caught my attention: most of them are white, although I also have some pink ones. It is the same plant, but its appearance changes quite a lot depending on the color and the way the light falls on it.
There is something I especially like about the white ones. Perhaps it is because they seem more discreet, although when many of them grow together, they can cover an entire plant and become the first thing you notice. Some are almost completely open, while others are still gathered together, forming little groups that look almost like paper, which is where that familiar name comes from.
The pink ones, on the other hand, have a different presence. Their color makes them stand out more, even when they appear among many leaves. I like having photographs of both shades because, although they belong to the same plant, each one creates a different feeling.
What is interesting is that I often walk past them without stopping. They are so common in our surroundings that they simply become part of everyday life. It is only when I have my phone in my hand and decide to photograph them that I start noticing details I would normally overlook: one flower that is more open than the others, another receiving direct sunlight, a small shadow among the petals, or the way several flowers gather along the same branch.
I also like that they don't look particularly delicate. They grow quite freely and can cover large spaces, spreading across walls and gardens. They have a kind of beauty that doesn't seem to require much care in order to be noticed.
Perhaps that is why I keep photographing them.
Not because every photograph has to tell a different story, but because the same plant can look different every time we stop to observe it. Sometimes the light changes, sometimes the angle changes, and sometimes we are simply the ones looking at it differently.
Among all the photographs, the white flowers are still my favorites.
Perhaps because they have that quiet way of catching your attention without asking for it.
