Our emotions do not exist in a vacuum; they have a physical home, a silent language that manifests itself in the way we breathe, in the tension in our backs and in the relaxation of our faces. On this occasion, @damarysvibra offers the @holos-lotus community a transformative suggestion: to observe our internal state closely. She reminds us that our physiology, mindset and inner dialogue directly shape how we react to life, especially when circumstances challenge us.

No one teaches us to listen to our bodies until the tension becomes unbearable or our emotions overwhelm us. However, when we start paying attention to NLP and body language, we discover that the body always sends early warning signs.

Adding to this valuable topic, I’d like to share my own recent experience, starting by recognising what my body tells me before words emerge and how, in the midst of the storm, I’ve learnt to find balance.

1. When you feel overwhelmed or tired, what is the first thing you notice in your body?

The first sensation I feel in my body is tension centred in my shoulders, running down my back – almost as if it were water from a cold shower. At the same time, I feel a slight tightness in my chest, depending on the context of the dilemma at hand.

If the dilemma is complex, my breathing tends to become shallow, creating the perfect conditions for a panic attack; however, upon detecting this first sign, I manage to take control of my breathing rhythm to stay calm. As for my face, I’ve learnt over time to keep it expressionless and serene, mainly to convey calm and composure to whoever is by my side.

2. What small physical change helps you shift your internal state in your day-to-day life?

In my internal control panel, I’ve managed to visualise my own ‘conscious reset button’ very clearly. This means that I instantly force myself to take an active pause to breathe deeply and, with each exhalation, release the accumulated stress.

When I do this, my shoulders involuntarily drop and relax, seeking stability so I can carry on. Amidst my current routines — which have me juggling hospital visits, household chores and homeschooling my daughters — I give myself five minutes to ground myself in the present, take firm steps and feel centred once more.

3. Would you like to learn in the next instalment how to ‘preserve’ this state of wellbeing using an anchor?

Absolutely! I find the NLP anchoring technique to be a formidable and deeply necessary tool. I find it extremely useful not only for getting through days of extreme stress, but also for providing us with an immediate internal resource whenever any setback arises in our daily lives.

The physiology of pain and restraint: An example from the heart

Reading @damarysvibra, I am particularly struck by how, in the field of healthcare, we all tend to exhibit very similar physiological and emotional patterns. One of the most complex is that anger born of helplessness and injustice, that inner voice asking ‘why me?’, to which life rarely offers a precise answer.

Having experienced this first-hand, I watch my husband navigate a range of emotions. He experiences the anger of feeling the injustice of his deteriorating health, faces the fear of medical procedures, and feels an even deeper fear: of loneliness and of not having us close by.

During our daily visits, I clearly notice how his body language and facial expressions change significantly as time goes on:

At the start: His face lights up, he becomes cheerful and his posture relaxes when he sees us arrive.
After thirty minutes: His expression begins to tense up, his shoulders rise, clearly showing the accumulated stress, and his hands cling to mine, seeking a firm point of support.
At the end of the visit: Tears well up in his eyes and his face takes on the vulnerability of a defenceless child. I have even noticed an involuntary action: he begins to move his foot on the bed, a rhythmic movement which, according to NLP, we can interpret as the body’s attempt to self-regulate emerging stress and anxiety.

1000047998.jpg

For my part, at that moment I strive to be his anchor of calm. I reflect in my own posture and expression the peace he lacks, regulating my breathing to steady his. With gentle words I try to ease his distress, reassuring him firmly yet lovingly that this storm is temporary and that we will soon be together again.

Every body possesses an inner key that allows it to regulate itself; it is up to each of us to recognise it, because whilst there may be similar keys in the world, the inner one will always have a small and unique difference. Recognise your emotions and learn from them: it is the only way to keep the lock well-oiled so that that key 🗝️ never gets stuck, leaving us paralysed.
