Case 1: The Stolen Fancy Dress Costume Everyone has a habit of wearing fancy dress, going trick-or-treating or attending themed parties. Of these three options, it was the last one that happened to our first friend, whom we’ll call Orieta to protect her identity. Orieta had been invited to a fancy dress party on 31 October itself, a day when it is said that ghosts briefly join the living and mingle amongst them. What’s more, the party had a major attraction: the best costume would win a cash prize which, whilst not exorbitant, was nonetheless considerable. Orieta was tempted by the prize. At first she thought of dressing up as a nun, but when she realised that several of her friends were planning the same thing, she dismissed the idea. And this is where the tragedy would unfold: a bad decision born of desperation. Orieta went to her grandmother, a dressmaker who worked wonders with fabric, and devised a costume that she could make for her. However, when she arrived home, her grandmother was not there. What she found draped over a chair left her astonished: a perfect vintage wedding dress, adorned with pearls and lace. She imagined herself dressed as a dead bride and, without asking permission, took it with her, thereby sealing her own fate. The dress fit her perfectly. It had a strong smell of mothballs, which she liked even more, as it gave it a very realistic antique feel. After carefully getting into character, Orieta looked terrifyingly perfect. Before leaving the house, she felt an icy chill run down her spine and, at the same time, a strange heaviness in her head that wouldn’t go away. As she looked in the mirror one last time, she froze in terror: she saw the figure of a dead woman staring intently at her from the reflection. The apparition let out a heart-rending scream, exclaiming that this was her dress. Terrified, Orieta hurriedly took it off whilst the skeletal figure faded before her eyes. She ran back to her grandmother’s house and handed the garment over, still pale and trembling. The old woman, with a serious look on her face, said to her: ‘My child, that dress belonged to a deceased woman, and she will wear it to go to the other world. You took it, and she has undoubtedly come to reclaim it.’ Orieta curled up in a ball in a corner, staring at the dress and still feeling that strange heaviness upon her head. So, dear friends, think carefully about who the costume you plan to wear this Halloween really belonged to.
