There are movies that leave you speechless—the kind where, as the credits roll, the only question left to ask is, "What did I just watch?" That is precisely what happened to me with this film. It is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn—the filmmaker behind Drive (starring Ryan Gosling)—who is already known for the distinctive cinematic style on display here. Now he brings us Her Private Hell, a dystopian movie where it is somewhat difficult to grasp exactly what is going on. What is Refn’s style? It relies on the heavy use of color and a neon-soaked aesthetic; the violence is calm yet powerful, and the films are highly minimalist, generally aiming to create a deeply immersive, almost hypnotic atmosphere. Does what I’ve said sound compelling enough for you to sit down and watch it? If the answer is yes, then go ahead—but do so at your own risk.
Hay películas que te dejan sin palabras, de esas que cuando comienzan a aparecer los créditos la única pregunta que te queda por hacer es: que acabo de ver? - y eso es lo que precisamente me pasó con este film. Nicolas Winding Refn es el director de esta película, un tipo que ya es conocido por el estilo de cine que veremos acá y que fue el director de "Drive", aquel film de Ryan Gosling; ahora llega con Her Private Hell, una película distópica en donde cuesta un poco entender que es lo realmente está pasando. Cual es el estilo de Refn? - uno que se basa en el uso excesivo del color, una estética basada en el neón, una violencia muy calmada pero al mismo tiempo potente, son films muy minimalistas y por lo general lo que busca es crear una atmosfera super envolvente, casi hipnótica. Te convence lo que te he dicho como para sentarte a verla? - si la respuesta es si pues hazlo, pero bajo tu riesgo.
The setting is a city—apparently in a dystopian future—dominated by darkness and ubiquitous neon lights; it has a distinctly cyberpunk vibe. A strange fog hangs over the city, said to bring horrors in its wake—among them "Leatherman," a lethal, violent, and elusive killer who, true to his name, is clad in leather. Amidst this, we find Elle (Sophie Thatcher), a young actress caught in a deeply peculiar family and professional dynamic with her stepmother and her father—a somewhat oppressive film director whose career is in total decline. Elle lives in a kind of bubble where luxury serves as a means of keeping her under control.
Nos encontramos en una ciudad, aparentemente en un futuro distópico, en la cual reina la oscuridad y las luces de neón por doquier, tiene un estilo medio ciberpunk la verdad. En esta ciudad hay una extraña niebla que se dice que trae con ella horrores siendo uno de ellos "Leatherman", un asesino letal, violento y escurridizo que, como su nombre lo dice, está vestido de cuero. En el medio de todo esto tenemos a Elle (Sophie Thatcher) una joven actriz que está inmersa en una relación familiar/laboral sumamente extraña con su madrastra y su padre, un director de cine un tanto opresivo y en la decadencia absoluta. Elle vive en una especie de burbuja en donde el lujo es una manera de mantenerla bajo control.
Running parallel to this is the story of Soldier K (Charles Melton), a U.S. serviceman desperately searching for his daughter, who was apparently abducted by the Leatherman and taken to an unknown location. To reach his goal, he must navigate the dangers of the streets and confront all manner of criminals, including the Yakuza. It is worth noting that the city's setting is based on Tokyo. At one point in the plot, the paths of Elle and Soldier K converge in an abstract, ghostly dimension where both must battle to confront their own traumas and losses. I know this all sounds quite strange and surreal, but that is simply how it is—it is the best overview of the plot I can give you. And to think I haven't even mentioned the pair of mystical entities (kitsunes) that appear in Elle's life to influence her decisions. Yes, it is a lot, but that is the nature of Nicolas Winding Refn's cinema.
Paralelamente tenemos al soldado K (Charles Melton), un militar de los Estados Unidos que está buscando desesperadamente a su hija la cual aparentemente fue secuestrada por el Leatherman y llevada a un lugar desconocido. Para poder llegar a donde quiere este hombre deberá pasar por los peligros de la calle y enfrentarse a toda clase de criminales, incluidos los Yakuza. Hay que decir que la ambientación de esta ciudad está basada en Tokyo. En algún momento de la trama los caminos de Elle y del soldado K se unen en una dimensión abstracta y fantasmal en donde ambos deberán luchar para enfrentarse a sus propios traumas y perdidas. Se que todo esto suena bastante extraño y surreal pero es así, esta es la mejor radiografía que les puedo hacer de esta trama. Y pensar que no les hablé del par de entidades místicas (kitsunes) que aparecen en la vida de Elle para influenciarla un poco en sus decisiones. Si, es mucho pero así es el cine de Nicolas Winding Refn.
It is a film that takes some time to digest, as its pacing is very deliberate and minimalist—almost theatrical at times. It employs a highly immersive soundtrack that keeps the experience afloat; without it, I dare say maintaining the film's rhythm would be impossible. Visually, it is a spectacle; the fog-drenched atmosphere combined with neon lights creates a mysterious, visually pleasing, and even hypnotic effect—a truly distinct and well-defined style. Lighting plays a key role here as well; I highly recommend watching it with the lights off, as it is a very dark film that uses shadow to craft a more sinister atmosphere. To reiterate: the cinematography is incredible. All of this sets the stage for the violence; don't let the pacing fool you—when Leatherman arrives, he moves stealthily but delivers a rather graphic "explosion" of brutality. The soldier's fight scenes are excellent too, featuring plenty of blood that undoubtedly adds a unique touch to the whole experience.
Es un film muy denso de digerir porque su ritmo es muy pausado y minimalista, diría que hasta teatral en algunos casos. Usa una banda sonora super envolvente que ayuda a que todo se mantenga a flote porque sino, ya les digo que sería imposible mantener el ritmo de esto. Visualmente es un espectáculo, todo el ambiente cubierto de niebla junto con las luces de neón hace que todo sea misterioso, agradable a la vista y hasta hipnótico; es un estilo bien definido y marcado. Otra de las cosas que van un poco de la mano con esto es la iluminación, les recomiendo que vean esto con todas las luces apagadas, es una película muy oscura que usa este recurso para crear una atmosfera más siniestra; repito, lo que a la cinematografía se refiere es increíble. Ahora, todo esto es creado para cuando llega la violencia y es que si, que el ritmo no los engañe, cuando el Leatherman llega actúa muy sigiloso pero con una "explosión" bastante gráfica. Las escenas de pelea del soldado también son muy buenas, hay mucha sangre ahí que sin dudas le da un toque particular a todo.
So, what’s the downside of this film? It is very difficult to understand; the story is highly ambiguous, and interpretation depends entirely on the individual viewer's mind. The pacing doesn't help matters—as I mentioned, it is very slow and enigmatic. Undoubtedly, the underlying themes deal heavily with past traumas—facing them and overcoming them. As for the performances, I personally really like Sophie Thatcher; I first discovered her in the series Yellowjackets (highly recommended). She excels in suspense and horror genres and knows how to convey the full range of emotions involved in the story. Honestly, it is a heavy film, though I wouldn't call it bad; it simply isn't straightforward. It leaves everything open to the audience's interpretation, allowing everyone to draw their own conclusions. That is where it "falls short." I don't regret watching it—it's always good to see something different—though I admit I didn't expect it to turn out the way it did. It runs for nearly two hours, so it is also a bit long. Que es lo malo entonces de este film? - que es muy difícil de entender, es una historia muy ambigua en donde la interpretación depende de cada mente que lo vea. No ayuda su ritmo que como ya he dicho es muy pausado y enigmático. Sin dudas el trasfondo tiene que ver mucho con traumas del pasado, como hacerles frente y como superarlos. En lo que a las actuaciones se refiere en lo personal me gusta mucho Sophie Thatcher, a ella la descubrí en la serie Yellowjackets (muy recomendada); estos géneros de suspenso y horror se le dan muy bien, sabe interpretar todas las emociones que involucran la historia. Honestamente es una película pesada pero no creo que sea mala, simplemente no es directa, deja todo al libre pensamiento de la gente y que cada quien seque sus propias conclusiones. Ahí es cuando "falla". No me arrepiento de haberla visto porque siempre hay que ver cosas diferentes aunque confieso que no me esperaba para nada lo que terminó siendo. Dura casi dos horas, un poco larga además. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo para que vean la gran estética que tiene.
