I have been watching several films from the body of work of Argentine actor and filmmaker Daniel de la Vega, a director who focuses on the horror genre within his country's cinema. Many people may not realize it, but there is a significant number of films and filmmakers dedicated to this genre in Argentina, and I am trying to catch up on various titles that had been on my watchlist but for which I hadn't found the time until now.

I have already seen Necrofobia, Al tercer día, La muerte conoce tu nombre, and the film featured in this post: Ataúd Blanco. I still have a few left to watch, including Los ojos del abismo—which I am very eager to see soon and will undoubtedly analyze for you. I wasn't sure which film to start with to introduce this filmmaker, but of the ones I’ve seen so far, Ataúd Blanco is the one I liked the most.

The film was released ten years ago, and although it is clearly a low-budget production, that matters little; I enjoyed the story, and the cinematography is excellent. There are magnificent shots and sequences. A film is made with the resources available, and here it is evident that the team strove to do a good job despite certain production limitations.

That is why I completely disagree with several opinions I found regarding the film—people calling it bad, cheap, and so on. I came across a barrage of reviews tearing it apart, but for me, it is quite the opposite; the very aspects some pointed out as negatives are, in my view, the factors that make the film stand out. I would love to know what the favorite horror movies are of those who criticized this film. They would probably only mention the latest Hollywood productions in the genre.

The story centers on Virginia, a woman traveling to a remote location with her daughter, with whom she has a strained relationship. There, the girl is kidnapped, and Virginia must follow specific instructions to rescue her. That is the basic premise, but there are several surprises along the way—and you know I don't reveal major plot spoilers. Everything takes an unexpected turn. You’ll find tension, chase sequences, supernatural elements, diabolical rituals, a cult, and mysterious events. It’s a real feast for horror movie fans. Oh, and there’s also a healthy dose of gore—the kind involving spurting blood and disemboweled bodies. I really enjoyed watching it; as I mentioned, it’s my favorite of this filmmaker’s works to date. I’d rank Al tercer día second; that one is also very good.

Some of the negative reviews I came across questioned the acting, but I found the performances quite acceptable. While one of the supporting actresses might not be entirely convincing, the rest of the cast is excellent—especially the lead, Julieta Cardinali. She plays a woman willing to do whatever it takes to rescue her daughter, even things beyond imagination. She faces a difficult, heart-wrenching decision where, at times, death seems like the best option. You’ll understand what I mean when you watch the full movie.

I’ll keep enjoying Argentine horror cinema—not just from this filmmaker, but also from others whose movies I have yet to see—though I’ll only recommend the ones I truly like. I watch a lot of movies, but I don’t write about all of them; there has to be something that motivates me to recommend a film.

He estado viendo varias películas de la filmografía del actor y cineasta argentino Daniel de la Vega, un director centrado en el género de terror dentro del cine de su país. Quizás mucha gente no lo sepa, pero existe un número considerable de películas y cineastas dedicados a este género en Argentina, y estoy tratando de ponerme al día con varios títulos que tenía pendientes en mi lista pero para los que no había encontrado tiempo hasta ahora.

Ya he visto Necrofobia, Al tercer día, La muerte conoce tu nombre y la película protagonista de esta publicación: Ataúd Blanco. Aún me quedan algunas por ver, incluida Los ojos del abismo, que tengo muchas ganas de ver pronto y que, sin duda, analizaré para ustedes. No estaba seguro de por cuál película empezar para presentar a este cineasta, pero de las que he visto hasta ahora, Ataúd Blanco es la que más me ha gustado.

La película se estrenó hace diez años y, aunque es claramente una producción de bajo presupuesto, eso importa poco; disfruté de la historia y la fotografía es excelente. Hay planos y secuencias magníficos. Una película se hace con los recursos disponibles, y aquí es evidente que el equipo se esforzó por hacer un buen trabajo a pesar de ciertas limitaciones de producción.

Por eso discrepo totalmente de varias opiniones que encontré sobre la película: gente que la califica de mala, barata, etcétera. Me topé con una avalancha de críticas que la destrozaban, pero para mí es todo lo contrario; precisamente aquellos aspectos que algunos señalaron como negativos son, a mi juicio, los factores que hacen que la película destaque. Me encantaría saber cuáles son las películas de terror favoritas de quienes criticaron este filme. Probablemente solo mencionarían las últimas producciones de Hollywood del género.

La historia se centra en Virginia, una mujer que viaja a un lugar remoto con su hija, con quien mantiene una relación tensa. Allí, la niña es secuestrada y Virginia debe seguir instrucciones específicas para rescatarla. Esa es la premisa básica, pero hay varias sorpresas por el camino; y ya saben que no revelo spoilers importantes de la trama. Todo da un giro inesperado. Encontrarán tensión, persecuciones, elementos sobrenaturales, rituales diabólicos, una secta y sucesos misteriosos. Es un verdadero festín para los amantes del cine de terror. Ah, y también hay una buena dosis de gore: del tipo que incluye chorros de sangre y cuerpos destripados. Disfruté mucho viéndola; como ya mencioné, es mi favorita de este cineasta hasta la fecha. En segundo lugar pondría a Al tercer día; esa también es muy buena.

Algunas de las críticas negativas que encontré cuestionaban las actuaciones, pero a mí me parecieron bastante aceptables. Si bien una de las actrices de reparto tal vez no resulte del todo convincente, el resto del elenco es excelente, especialmente la protagonista, Julieta Cardinali. Ella interpreta a una mujer dispuesta a hacer lo que sea necesario para rescatar a su hija, incluso cosas inimaginables. Se enfrenta a una decisión difícil y desgarradora en la que, a veces, la muerte parece la mejor opción. Entenderán a qué me refiero cuando vean la película completa.

Seguiré disfrutando del cine de terror argentino —no solo de este cineasta, sino también de otros cuyas películas aún tengo pendientes de ver—, aunque solo recomendaré aquellas que realmente me gusten. Veo muchas películas, pero no escribo sobre todas ellas; tiene que haber algo que me motive a recomendar un filme.

WoW!! They absolutely trashed that poor movie. The part about it being low-budget is technically true, but the way they put it was totally unnecessary haha 😅😅

I’ll judge for myself to see if it’s really that crappy. I'm watching it tonight and I'll review it later 🤪🤪

I’ll enjoy seeing how they adapted with the resources they had. Maybe it just lacked some 'woke' element for the critics to say it was good; for years now, critics have been acting like that in my opinion. For example, they are destroying The Last Photograph, and it's probably because there isn't an Emilia Pérez in there 😅😅

WoW!! Le dieron durisimo a la pobre pelicula, lo de Barata tecnicamente es cierto pero la forma de expresarlo innecsaria jaja 😅😅, la juzgare a ver si de verdad es tan caca, la vere hoy y la reseñare luego 🤪🤪

Me agradara ver como se adaptaron con los recursos que tienen, tal vez les hizo falta algun elemento Woke para que la critica dijera que es buena, desde hace años la critica actua asi a mi parecer, por ejemplo The Last Photograph la andan destruyendo y seguro es porque no hay una Emilia Perez alli 😅😅

Hay muchas películas que las catalogan de forma negativa, a veces uno se deja llevar por eso, y cuando la ves, resulta todo lo contrario, y viceversa. Como siempre digo, esto es lo bueno del cine,hay para todos los gustos. Con respecto a este film, ya con la parte sangrienta, estilo gore, no se, sabes que no es mi estilo, jeje, pero si tú la recomiendas, debe valer la pena. Como bien mencionas, para que uno haga una reseña de una película, algo debió haber impactado. Saludos, amigo,un gusto leerte.

There are a lot of movies that get a bad rap; sometimes you let that influence you, and when you actually watch them, it turns out to be the exact opposite—and vice versa. Like I always say, that’s the beauty of movies—there’s something for everyone. As for this movie—with all the gory, bloody stuff—I don’t know, you know that’s not really my style, hehe, but if you recommend it, it must be worth watching. As you rightly point out, for someone to write a review of a movie, something must have made an impression. Cheers, friend—it’s a pleasure to read your posts.

I’ve seen very few Argentine horror films, although I have seen plenty of films in other genres; but I recognise the lead actress, and people may talk about them being low budget, yet sometimes they’re more realistic than those films that rely so heavily on special effects. I’ll have to look it up because I’d never heard of it before, even though I was in Argentina when it was released. As I’ve often told you, films of this sort are usually better. Now my question is whether those critics know as much about subjects like cinematography as you do. That’s why your reviews are the best, because you know what you’re talking about with professionalism, regardless of whether the film is to the viewer’s taste or not.

He visto muy poco cine de terror argentino, aunque sí muchas otras películas de otros géneros, pero conozco a la actriz principal y podrán hablar de bajo presupuesto pero a veces son más realistas que aquellas películas donde usan tantos efectos especiales. Tengo que buscarla porque nunca había escuchado hablar de ella y eso que cuando se dio el estreno yo estaba en Argentina. Como te decía muchas veces las películas de estas características son mejores. Ahora mi pregunta es si esos críticos saben de temas como fotografía como sabes vos. Por eso tus reseñas son las mejores, porque sabes de que estás hablando con profesionalismo, más allá que sea la película del gusto o no del espectador.

No he visto la película pero resaltas muchos aspectos interesantes de ella, lo que genera curiosidad. El juicio de valor es subjetivo, así que si los aspectos negativos de la crítica son puntos fuertes para ti, habría que verla para ver si estoy de tu lado 😂
