What the songwriter intended to convey in one of them isn’t exactly what someone else felt when they heard it for the first time, and I have a long list of songs that meant something very different to me than what the lyrics were meant to convey. I feel that’s what makes music so special—that we all experience it differently, and even though we have different life experiences, we can relate it to or identify it with something very specific in our own lives.
That happened to me with a song, “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt—a song that, when you hear it, you might think is about a love story. And yes, indeed, for me it’s a way of experiencing one of the purest and deepest loves in my life. What the song means to me is that every time I hear it, no matter where I am, I’ll feel it intensely, and it’ll make me think of someone very important and special to me—my niece.
One day I was feeling extremely sad because I missed my niece, and I heard this song, which I related to deeply. And yes, it turned out to be a beautiful song with lyrics I couldn’t apply to anyone else—it became her song forever. At first glance, the lyrics tell the story of a man who is deeply in love with a woman he can’t be with and whom he’ll probably never see again, but he realizes she’s someone very special and unique—someone who stands out from everyone else in the world.
