Throughout the month of October, the importance of mental health was highlighted. During those days, social media and everywhere else were filled with messages promoting suicide prevention and encouraging people to seek help, and the truth is that I’ll always really appreciate these kinds of posts and calls to action because there’s a global epidemic of mental illness, and every day the number of people who simply decided to end their lives because their feelings overwhelmed them keeps rising.

However, there are some things that aren’t always given as much attention, and I’m glad I was able to participate in one of them. A hospital near where I live hosted a really nice event called “Caring for the Caregivers,” which was a workshop discussing the importance of mental health when working in a healthcare setting—a topic that’s rarely addressed but is very necessary.

In this workshop, we learned that when we’re not feeling well emotionally or mentally, we can become less empathetic, and when caring for people who need help, we might easily lose our patience. That’s why it’s essential for healthcare professionals who work with the public to be aware of how their attitude can influence the person in front of them who is asking for help.

Because yes, even people who are dedicated to caring for the sick can also become ill themselves, and in fact, there’s a high likelihood that this will happen, since daily life is filled with stressful situations that gradually push us to our limits. Of course, during the workshop, we were instructed on what to do in such cases, starting with honestly identifying how we feel.

If we know we’re not well, it’s our duty to immediately seek help and heal so that we can help others heal. The truth is, this struck me as incredibly important—because how can you help someone else if you need help yourself? And while this applies to anyone, when it comes to someone responsible for others’ health, I feel it’s even more necessary and important, since the public places a great deal of trust in you.

Our mental health can even affect someone else’s mental health, and that’s unfair. That’s why we were encouraged to be very aware of how we feel so we can seek help as soon as possible. Of course, this isn’t just our own responsibility but also that of the people we work with, so we were also encouraged to be observant and look at others with empathy to see if they’re going through a difficult time and invite them to seek help.

I really enjoyed the workshop, and of course, I received a certificate for participating. I learned a lot, since the workshop was led by a psychiatrist with many years of experience who explained the topic in a very simple way so that it would be clear to everyone in the audience. Definitely, if we’re not mentally well, nothing can function properly, and I feel it’s important to think about that every month of the year—not just in October.
