Today I want to tell you about a new book that’s a little difficult to read, but that still draws you in from the very first moment you start reading it—it’s called The Color of Milk, written by Nell Leyshon. You could say—or at least from my perspective—that it’s a psychological novel that captivates you in a rather unique way, and yet it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable read.
It tells the story of Mary, a girl who lived in England in 1831 and grew up in a place where little importance was placed on education—only on hard work and farm labor. From childhood, she had to struggle with heavy labor just to obtain basic necessities like food, but also to earn the acceptance of those who were supposed to care for her. She grew up in a rather difficult environment where she was always made to feel like a burden, yet she had a great dream she longed to fulfill.
Finally, amidst the painful and outrageous situation of being sold like an object, she gets the chance to fulfill that dream, but things don’t go as she hopes. Her new reality is even worse than the one before, and the only thing that has changed is that she no longer works hard in the fields. She now finds herself paying a very high price for achieving what she had always dreamed of—learning to read and write—but at a cost she can no longer bear, and surrounded by people who appear to be one thing but whose reality is very different.

The ending of this passage is quite powerful from my perspective, and in its lines you can sense what Mary is feeling and just how unfair it all can be for a person without resources who has been denied something basic and necessary. It shows how there are people so cruel that, by giving so little to a defenseless being, they can take advantage of her innocence to somehow tarnish it or cause her harm.
This passage made me think about how most of us underestimate what we’re given for free today, such as education. Nowadays, we have the opportunity to learn even from home, but a few hundred years ago, the reality was completely different. Very few had the chance to learn, and those who did ended up paying—like Mary—a very high price.
On the other hand, when we feel in some way violated, abused, or even stripped of our dignity, we may lose our temper and want to take justice into our own hands. Although there are things that are socially—and even internally—unacceptable, such as murder, experiencing so much pain and suffering can lead you to make desperate decisions that end up having even worse consequences.
It also makes me think that these days, the one who is right doesn’t always win. Often, it’s the person with the best social reputation—or the one with enough money to bribe others—who comes out on top. From my point of view, this book is quite realistic because it doesn’t end with the happy ending we expected, even though he fulfilled his dream of learning to communicate and put his feelings down on paper, and he faced many challenges to finally put those long-awaited words into writing.
