I recently received some news that felt like a bucket of cold water. Someone who used to be a part of my life passed away, and hearing this affected me deeply—mainly because I didn’t know how to feel about it. Well, as I said, it had been a long time since I’d spoken to or seen this person, but even so, I felt a sense of grief.
Back then, they were someone with whom I shared so many important things, but things didn’t end well, and in the end—as always happens—we each went our separate ways, which meant we lost touch for almost an entire decade. Although the idea of reaching out to say hello and find out how things were going was always there, the truth is that it never became anything more than that; it was just an idea.
That’s why, when the bad news came, I experienced this whole rush of emotions all at once—including guilt for not having written even a simple “hello” or something similar, even though I’d thought about it many times. My first thought was that I had no right to feel this way, because I hadn’t dared to ask how they were doing before they passed away, and that I shouldn’t express it because I was no longer part of their life.

This made things a little worse for me, emotionally speaking, because in a way I was preventing myself from feeling what I should have felt, until I couldn’t take it anymore and simply got caught in this vicious cycle where I kept asking myself over and over again why I hadn’t said goodbye. In moments like those, many thoughts go through your mind, but emotions can sometimes be much stronger than reason.
So I found myself crying without feeling worthy of doing so, writing to his family to tell them I was sorry for what had happened, afraid they might say something negative to me. But in the end, it was just my mind desperately searching for a way to say goodbye and not being able to find it anywhere. Although I know this won’t be the only time something like this happens to me, I do know that experiencing grief that you feel you must live through in secret makes it take much longer to come to terms with what’s happening.

Perhaps in my mind there was always the possibility that one day things would change and we’d simply go back to being friends like we used to be, and that possibility felt so real to me that I simply forgot that something like that could actually happen. Of course, I learned a hard lesson: no matter what has happened in the past, asking how someone is doing and how their health is going transcends any bad memories.
I spent several weeks waiting for a scheduled email that was supposed to arrive, in which I would read at least a farewell message from this person, and that never happened. But, as I said, when emotions are running so high and you feel so bad, they can get the better of reason just a little bit. For now, there are moments when I remember what happened and still can’t believe it—I don’t know if I’ll ever truly believe it. But what I do know is that I have a clear hope and a chance to see them again.
