Ever since I was little, I’ve been lucky enough to know Colonia Tovar. On our family trips, my three siblings, my parents, and I always made this our top choice, but it wasn’t until I became an adult that I learned about an incredibly beautiful spot in Colonia Tovar that I honestly thought had just opened recently. The truth is, it’s been there for ages, and I simply hadn’t discovered it—even though I was so close by.
So, over the past few years, I’ve seen photos of friends and acquaintances visiting this place, and I have to say it’s somewhere I’ve been eager to visit. In the photos, it looked like a magical place—perfect for taking stunning pictures—one of those spots we visit for more than just “Instagrammable” shots, to appreciate how something can be just as beautiful without harming the environment or the stunning natural surroundings.

Desde que soy pequeña tuve la dicha de conocer la Colonia Tovar. En nuestros viajes familiares, mis tres hermanos, mis padres y yo teníamos esta como primera opción, pero no fue sino hasta llegar a adulta que supe de la existencia de un lugar demasiado lindo en la Colonia Tovar que honestamente pensé que había sido inaugurado recientemente. La verdad es que tiene un montón de tiempo ahí y simplemente yo no lo había conocido, aún cuando estuve tan cerca.
Entonces, durante los últimos años he visto fotos de amigos y conocidos visitando este lugar y debo decir que es un sitio que deseaba conocer. En las fotos parecía ser un lugar mágico, bastante lindo para tomar fotos que salen sumamente bonitas, uno de esos lugares que visitamos más allá de las fotosinstagrameables, para apreciar cómo algo puede ser igual de hermoso sin hacer daño al ambiente ni a la tan hermosa naturaleza.
This little house, which is so well-built and also beautiful to look at, goes far beyond its appearance, since its construction is 100% eco-friendly and was, in fact, designed that way to protect the life of the enormous 200-year-old tree that supports it. I was surprised to learn that no nails or anything else that could in any way damage the tree were used. They simply used wooden clamps and iron straps, and there are the cables that hold it up, but you could say that the house is simply around the tree and not on top of it.
Getting there took some time because first we had to travel from the city where I live to another city about 35 minutes away, La Victoria. That’s where the buses depart for Colonia Tovar. We waited a few minutes at the La Victoria terminal for the bus to fill up completely so we could board, because yes, it’s a road with a lot of uphill climbs. After two hours, we arrived at the location, but to actually see the little house, we had to travel a bit further, so we took a 4x4 because the road is rough and quite steep, and after about 20 minutes, we finally reached the little house.

Esta casita que está tan bien hecha y también es hermosa a la vista va mucho más allá de su apariencia, pues su construcción es 100% ecológica y de hecho fue diseñada así para proteger la vida de ese enorme árbol de 200 años que la sostiene. Me sorprendió saber que no se utilizaron clavos ni ninguna cosa que de algún modo pueda dañar al árbol. Simplemente fueron utilizadas abrazaderas de madera y correas de hierro, y ahí están los cables que la sostienen, pero podría decirse que simplemente la casa está alrededor del árbol y no sobre él.
Llegar hasta ahí tomó algo de tiempo porque primero tuvimos que viajar desde la ciudad en la que vivo a otra ciudad que quedaba a unos 35 minutos, La Victoria. De ahí es que salen los autobuses que suben a la Colonia Tovar. Esperamos unos cuantos minutos en el terminal de La Victoria para que el autobús se llenara por completo y pudiera subir, porque sí, es una vía de muchas subidas. Luego de 2 horas llegamos al lugar, pero para poder conocer la casita tuvimos que viajar otro poquito más, así que tomamos un carro 4x4 porque la vía es rústica y bastante inclinada, y después de unos 20 minutos finalmente llegamos a la casita.
Visiting it was quite an experience, mainly because my unfulfilled dream is to have a little treehouse. I thought it was beautifully crafted, from the bridge leading to it to its structure, which had the tree’s thick trunk right in the center. In fact, you can tell they built it with very high-quality materials. I wasn’t afraid at all that something might shift or break, since everything felt solid and stable as I walked.
Inside the treehouse, many people have carved their initials into the wood (not the tree itself) to leave some sort of mark that they were there. My friends and I did the same. I don’t know when I’ll go back, but I must say that discovering this place was my favorite part of visiting Colonia Tovar again, and I really enjoyed realizing this time that no matter how many times you visit a place, there’s always something new to discover—in this case, a cute little house in a beautiful, huge tree.

Conocerla fue toda una experiencia, principalmente porque mi sueño frustrado es tener una casita en un árbol. Me pareció hermosamente hecha, desde el puente para llegar a ella y por su estructura que contenía en todo el centro el tronco grueso del árbol. De hecho, se nota que esto lo hicieron con materiales de muy buena calidad. No sentí nada de miedo de que algo fuera a moverse o a romperse, pues todo se sentía sólido y estable al caminar.
En la casita muchos han escrito en la madera de la casa (no la del árbol) sus iniciales para de alguna manera dejar constancia de que estuvieron ahí. Mis amigos y yo también lo hicimos. No sé cuándo volveré a ir, pero sí debo decir que conocer este lugar fue mi parte favorita de visitar la Colonia Tovar de nuevo, y me gustó mucho en esta ocasión darme cuenta de que por más que tú visites un sitio siempre hay algo nuevo que conocer, en este caso, una linda casita en un hermoso y gran árbol.
