Having a place where you feel comfortable and to which you always want to return is a true gift, because—at least for me—a place like that helps me recharge my batteries and, in fact, regain the strength to keep moving forward with my life. But over the years, I’ve learned that it’s incredibly difficult to grow in this place; in fact, staying in our comfort zone for too long makes us less and less willing to step outside of it each day.
In my case, I’ve noticed how comfortable I am where I am that I don’t feel like doing anything else—because it might involve something difficult or uncomfortable. Fortunately, when we learn, we have the opportunity to change things that aren’t doing us any good, so that’s when my conscious self stepped in to remind me that beyond my comfort and sense of safety, learning always comes hand in hand with the exact opposite.

And on a slightly more serious note, several years ago I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. One of my assignments as part of my therapy was to do something known as “shock therapy”: the longer I could talk to someone, leave the house, or engage in some kind of social activity, the more likely my brain was to adapt and get used to the idea that I can and am capable of socializing with other people.
The truth is that this has really helped me a lot, although I have to admit that I procrastinated a lot when it came to doing this exercise, which only kept me in a comfort zone where I wasn’t growing or even improving emotionally. So you could say it took me longer than it would have if I’d started sooner, but even though this is more of a psychological and mental health issue, the truth is that it works the same way in everyday life.

Sometimes, because we don’t want to feel the discomfort of being in a place that might not have the same comforts as our home, we miss out on a fun activity where we’ll not only meet people but also learn valuable things. I used to repeat a phrase to myself a lot: “Just do it, and if you’re scared, do it anyway.” And even though it seemed like a simple motivational phrase, the truth is that it hits the nail on the head— The more we dare to try new things—even when fear is present—the better we’ll feel.
As a personal challenge, I set a goal for myself to say “yes” to activities I used to say “no” to. In fact, lately people say I repeat the phrase “yes to everything” a lot. What they don’t know is that most of the time when I said that, I was really scared and wanted to say “no.” Despite all this, I’ve had some really nice experiences and others not so much; sometimes that fear was justified, and things didn’t go as well as I’d have liked, but the result was the same: growth and learning.
So even though we’ve always run away from discomfort and from feeling that something isn’t what we want, the truth is that this feeling isn’t all bad—and in fact, it can be incredibly beneficial—because discomfort is so closely tied to learning; there’s little chance we’ll learn anything if we don’t experience some discomfort along the way. And I think that’s what life is all about—that despite everything, you keep striving to learn and improve every day.
