Today I want to share my thoughts on a book I read several years ago, The Tunnel by Ernesto Sábato—a book that, in my opinion, is so beautifully written and has such depth in its prose that, personally, I still remember it as a book I enjoyed immensely, especially because of those lovely passages that you inevitably come to identify with, and other elements that, honestly, were quite challenging for me but that I still managed to understand.
Something that catches my attention about this book—and that I honestly really like—is that it begins at the end; in fact, it literally starts by recounting what happened. But the book isn’t about reaching the end; rather, it’s about understanding why everything that happened did happen. So, as we read its pages, we see a human being filled with so many shortcomings that, in the wrong way, he tried to avoid what he was feeling.
It tells the story of Juan Pablo Castel, a man with a very unique personality who, like any good artist, feels suffocated by a profound loneliness. This loneliness is so intense that he goes through life searching for something to help him escape it; and in fact, for this very reason, when he encountered someone who, from his perspective, could put an end to what was causing him so much distress, he immediately clung to the idea of making that person a part of his daily life.

Amid a crowd of people who, from his perspective, were empty and had nothing to offer him, he found a glimmer of light that, with a single gesture, made him feel understood and that, after all, he wasn’t really as alone as he thought. But there was one problem: this person—who, without even knowing him, had become his savior—didn’t even know he existed yet.
That’s how Juan Pablo sets out to get closer to María and does everything he can to bring her into his life as well—only, María’s reality is completely different from what Juan Pablo expects, and this becomes a huge problem from which he can no longer turn back, leaving him much more miserable than he was at the beginning.
I must say that the book is a very easy read, and I love that. The fact that you can identify with this character is something I don’t love, because it makes you empathize with a person who, in the end—despite all the bad things—still has some humanity inside. Although there are parts where you might be disturbed by what a human being is capable of doing, it helps you understand what drove him to do it—even if it doesn’t make you justify it.
The book delves quite deeply into how a person often feels and how being overwhelmed by these emotions can lead them to make decisions that are completely wrong. When you find a little color in your life during a gray moment, you can’t help but cling to it with all your might. However, if you’re feeling down, sometimes you don’t realize that clinging to it can make you feel even more down.

The book makes it clear how a person, when feeling empty and alone, can’t stop looking to others for what they’re missing, clinging to the idea that the solution to this huge problem lies outside themselves. But the reality is different; some time ago I read somewhere that “whatever we have inside us, we’ll always carry it with us wherever we run,” and it’s true. No matter how much you want to make someone your savior, there are inner issues that only you can heal.
It also makes you realize that people often confuse quite harmful behaviors with love. The thing is, when we feel something deep for someone, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re in love with that person or that we want them in our lives forever; love is far from being possessive or wanting to prevent the other person from being happy—rather, it wants the other person to be well, even if that means not being in their life.
I can say that although most of us understand well that there are ways of behaving that are quite toxic, many of us exhibit some of these traits, and this book, in a way, makes you notice them in a very raw way—but also in a rather poetic way, with phrases that touch you deep within your being. It’s definitely a great book that I loved reading at the time and that I highly recommend.
