I think I’ve written enough about 2026 to know it was an unforgettable year in the lives of all Venezuelans. It seemed as though everything that had been building up in Venezuela for decades decided to explode all at once, as if our country simply couldn't take it anymore. I’ve always been a very organized person, and that showed in my Hive blog; until a couple of months ago, I posted daily and maintained great order in everything I shared. However, the earthquakes destroyed more than just buildings, they literally shattered entire lives. I’m fine, and my loved ones are safe, but the chaos left in the wake of those first few months has been hard to sort through, and now it’s piling up alongside the demands of returning to work. The reason for this long introduction is to highlight the many stories I couldn't share during that time, either because I forgot them or because they didn't seem relevant to what we were living through here.

Despite the events that unfolded since January of this year, life in my world was so incredibly beautiful in June ❤️ I celebrated my birthday, fulfilled childhood and musical dreams, and my closest loved ones were having a wonderful time, too. I felt so happy because, after so many years living far from home, it finally seemed like I had built a great family made up entirely of friends; only the best people remained after so many failed attempts with the wrong people—folks who had to leave my life for various reasons. The night captured in these photos was truly special: we had a concert, and then we had the whole night ahead of us to enjoy ourselves, surrounded by friends and family...

My wife and I were in a great place, in fact, we were celebrating our nine years together, and our friends were also achieving a lot in their lives, both materially and spiritually. That day, one of them was showing off his new motorcycle, while the other was falling for one of my wife’s best friends. There was a sense that our family was growing. We didn’t do anything too wild, we were still tired from the concert, but I remember we had dinner, drank beer, and stayed at my place until the early hours of the morning, happy and enjoying our youth and the fruits of our hard work. It seemed like nothing could spoil such happiness, even though our country’s political and economic troubles are always, ALWAYS breathing down our necks...

None of us ever imagined that life was about to change in just a few days, though, as a fan of Planet Earth and geography, I remember telling my wife and mom the day after my birthday: "Don't you find it strange that in my 38 years, we've never experienced an earthquake?"... Yes, I have some odd abilities, but that’s a topic for another post and another community 😅 All my friends and family are safe, but, just like for us (my wife and I), the earthquakes brought significant consequences to their lives; in fact, those consequences affected everyone in the impacted regions. Various plans that were in the works fell through, many projects came to a sudden halt, and although so much has changed, even the nature of our friendships, I can say that the bond remains so genuine that we are all still together today, even though the relationship was forced to evolve.

Our city was violently shaken, and although we weren't the hardest hit in the country, our lives changed forever. Just between us, my wife and I haven't been able to recover financially from everything that happened in the weeks following those earthquakes, including the loss of our family homes in the neighboring state. If that is our situation here in the capital, I can't even imagine what our brothers and sisters on the other side of the Ávila, over in La Guaira, are feeling or what they lost. And yes, we have friends who still live there and are still with us, something we consider a miracle after what happened, but the point of this reflection I’m writing today is that nothing is the same anymore; things still feel like an open wound.

Living in a city struck by a powerful earthquake, a city already weighed down by an atmosphere thick with murky politics and a truly dire economy, means living amidst extreme collective anxiety. It is an environment rife with the fears, traumas, and sorrows one might encounter right in the hallway upon stepping out the door. Everyone I know was affected in some way by this tragedy, which compounded the chaos we were already enduring; this has caused people to change, I myself have changed significantly since that event. I believe it is a form of collective mourning, and as you know, mourning brings about a profound shift in a person and their way of life, or at least that is how I see it. It fills me with nostalgia for routines I was living just three months ago, routines that have now, quite suddenly, become a thing of the past.

Everyone in these photos is very special to me, I care about them deeply, though the connections between them aren't all as strong as the individual bond I share with each of them. Human relationships are complicated, but I believe that mature adults can navigate it all. That night, just one of many June nights, was truly special to me and marks a significant moment in my life; I know it was a great moment for them, too. You could feel it in their energy and what they said, it even shows in these photos. Experiences like these make us value the people close to us more, but they also make us value peace; and to find peace, we have to reflect and understand what is good and bad for us. Here’s to more moments like this in the future, and I embrace every moment I’ve lived, whether good or bad 🙏
