Happy start to the week to everyone at Worldmappin! I hope you’re doing well. My trip to Medellín was exactly two years ago, and I still have some photos from that beautiful experience, getting to know at least a part of my neighboring country, Colombia. In case you haven't read my previous posts about this city: my wife and friends went for academic reasons to participate in a competition, but I had the pleasure of going purely for tourism and a vacation and I certainly saw a lot of Medellín during that week-long trip...

¡Feliz inicio de semana para todos en Worldmappin!, espero que estén bien. Mi viaje a Medellín fue exactamente hace dos años, y aún tengo algunas imágenes de esa hermosa experiencia que significó conocer al menos una parte de mi país vecino, Colombia. Por si no has leído mis post sobre esta ciudad en el pasado, mi esposa y y mis amigos fueron por motivos académicos, para participar en un concurso, pero yo tuve la dicha de asistir solo por motivos turísticos y vacacionales, y vaya que conocí mucho de Medellín en esa semana que duró nuestro viaje...

Although I made the most of the entire week (except for the first night, when I arrived with a severe headache), I focused on visiting popular spots near the city center and within the city itself, so I didn't venture out to the outskirts, which also boast many tourist attractions. Within Medellín, I visited places like Plaza Botero in the city center, the traditional Pueblito Paisa, and the historic, colorful Comuna 13. Of course, we also had the pleasure of enjoying major shopping malls and the spaces where young people engaged in artistic activities.

Aunque aproveché la semana entera (sacando la primera noche donde llegué con un fuerte dolor de cabeza), traté de aprovechar de conocer los lugares más populares cercanos al centro y que quedaran dentro de la misma ciudad, así que no me escapé hacia las afueras donde también hay muchas atracciones turísticas. Dentro de Medellín conocí lugares como la Plaza Botero en el centro, el tradicional Pueblito Paisa y la histórica y colorida Comuna 13. Por supuesto, tuvimos la dicha de disfrutar de importantes centros comerciales y los espacios donde los muchachos tendrían vida artística.

The artistic venues we visited in downtown Medellín were the Institute of Fine Arts, the Pablo Tobón Uribe Theater, and IDEA (Institute for the Development of Antioquia). From what I gathered during my visit, these spaces are not easily accessible to the general public; to enter, one generally needs to be affiliated with the institution or attend an event held there. On the other hand, the shopping malls we visited—which are open to everyone—were Santa Fe Mall, where we happened to see a beautiful floral carpet display during the Flower Festival, and Viva Mall, which I consider one of the largest I have ever seen in my life.

Esos lugares artísticos que conocimos en el centro de Medellín fueron el Instituto de Bellas Artes, el Teatro Pablo Tubón Uribe y el IDEA, Instituto para el Desarrollo de Antioquía. Estos espacios no son de fácil acceso según lo que indagué esos días, y para entrar a ellos tendrías que ser parte de la institución a asistir a un evento que se realicé dentro de ellos. Por otro lado, y de libre acceso, los centros comerciales que conocimos en Medellín fueron el Centro Comercial Santa Fe, donde coincidimos con un hermoso tapete de flores en la celebración del Festival de las Flores y el Centro Comercial Viva, el cual considero uno de los más grandes que he conocido en toda mi vida.

In this post, you can see a summary of that wonderful week in Colombia. It was a difficult time for Venezuelans and for us as a couple; the trip took place right after the fraudulent presidential election in my country, and it had been only two weeks since we buried my father-in-law, who had died from a cardiovascular event. Yet, setting aside the emotional toll it took on my wife, I found strength in the neighboring country—escaping the chaos for a while. The joy and serenity I felt breathing a different atmosphere at that precise moment helped me stay strong and provide steady support to my partner during a terrible time that continues to wreak havoc to this day.

En este post pueden apreciar un resumen de lo que fue esa maravillosa semana en Colombia. No fue un buen tiempo para los venezolanos ni para nosotros como matrimonio, ya que este viaje fue inmediatamente al fraude de las elecciones presidenciales en mi país, y solo teníamos dos semanas de haber enterrado a mi suegro que murió por un accidente cardiovascular, pero sacando lo que pudo significar para mi esposa, yo cogí fuerzas en el país vecino, escapé un rato del caos, y la alegría y serenidad que me dio respirar otros aires justo en ese momento me ayudó a ser fuerte para brindarle a mi chica una compañía sólida en una época terrible que sigue causando estragos en la actualidad.

Sometimes I feel a bit sad ending all my travel posts with the promise to return to the places life has allowed me to visit—partly because we never really know what tomorrow holds, though I do like to remain optimistic and hope for the best. Then there is the financial aspect, especially given the country I live in; at the end of the day, travel stops being a priority when daily life becomes a struggle for survival. Still, I have a lot going for me—in fact, my most beautiful and far-flung trips have come about through my work, and not everyone can say that. There is so much more of Medellín I want to explore, and I’d also love to visit the Colombian capital; it isn't even that far from home. I hope to return and to fulfill a small dream there that I’ve set for myself ever since my visit two years ago 🙏

A veces me da algo de tristeza terminar todos mis posts de viajes con la promesa de regresar a todos estos lugares que la vida me ha permitido conocer; primero porque realmente nunca sabemos qué pasará mañana, pero al mismo tiempo me gusta ser optimista y esperar lo mejor de la vida, y segundo, siempre pienso en el factor económico, especialmente por vivir en el país en que vivo, porque al final del día los viajes dejan de ser una prioridad cuando el día a día se trata de sobrevivir, pero tengo muchas cosas buenas a favor, y de hecho, los viajes más bonitos y más lejanos para mí han venido a través de mi propio trabajo, no todo el mundo puede decir eso. Medellín tiene mucho que quiero seguir conociendo, y además me gustaría conocer la capital colombiana, ni siquiera es tan lejos de casa. Espero volver y espero cumplir en esta ciudad un pequeño sueño que me he propuesto desde que fui hace dos años 🙏
