My Caturday with Firumiau

Happy Caturday everyone! Today, I’m happy to share some photos from the day I visited Firimiau. For those who don’t know him, this mischievous little blond fellow is my brother’s cat; he lives at my family home—meaning he’s taken over the life I had before moving to a different city, and yes, my childhood bedroom too... I don’t have a cat of my own right now, so I’m left playing the role of the distant uncle who visits only occasionally. And naturally, since I’m a stranger to him, he steers clear of the person who suddenly pops up in his territory with the intention of taking photos...

I arrived very early that Caturday morning, and in fact, before I could even hug my mom, whom I hadn't seen in a while, the first thing I encountered at home was Firumiau tearing apart one of the dining room chairs... He doesn't sit at the table with us anymore like he used to, but he certainly still takes over our chairs. He was wide awake at that moment and let me take a few photos, but the rest of the day was a bit more challenging, as you'll see in the pictures below and I had to wait until he got sleepy so the shots wouldn't come out blurry.

I have visited my childhood home very few times this year: I left in January after the holidays, returned for Mother’s Day in May, and then came back to check on things after the earthquakes in July, since it has been a very difficult year. I had hoped to spend a nice vacation at home in August, but that didn't happen. I mention all this to highlight just how long it has been since I last saw that little green-eyed blond boy, a child who is practically a stranger to me now, as he has grown older and developed habits he didn't have during his first year of life, back when I used to visit and even look after him frequently.

My brother had him neutered when he turned six months old, back in July of last year. I remember acting as his nurse for an entire weekend. The idea behind the procedure wasn't just to prevent him from fathering kittens, but also to keep him from getting used to roaming the streets as he grew older. My brother made many modifications to the house, since his previous cats had died from poisoning, something that never happened to any of my cats while I lived there and during the few visits I’ve had in 2026, I’ve always seen Firumiau sizing up ways to get past every wall and escape, though he never succeeded.

But all that has changed. This September, I encountered an adult Firumiau, cunning, handsome, and intelligent, capable of outsmarting any trap my brother or mom set for him. He rules the neighborhood rooftops, though I have to admit he frequently traverses our own roof as well; fortunately, he gets along with the other cats on the block. Firumiau doesn't fight; on the contrary, he seems to steer clear of the local cat drama. I’ve also noticed he’s a bit aloof when it comes to affection. Cats always decide when they want affection, but this one in particular doesn't seek me out much, no matter how loving I am toward him. After all, I am merely a temporary intrusion in "his house."

At night, he acted more like a loyal friend. My room is being renovated, and like any good houseguest, I had to sleep on the living room sofa while everyone else was in their rooms with the doors closed, so I had to share the space with Firumiau. He is a total pain at night; like any young cat, he tears around the house, hunts, jumps, and makes a lot of noise. When he’s hungry, he comes over to the sofa and wakes me up, even if he has food in his bowl 😒 It seems like he just wants someone to keep him company and watch him eat. This could easily be solved by opening the window, but even though he’s a seasoned rooftop cat, we still prefer that he doesn't go outside.

I’m writing this post from my own home in a different city, far away from my family and, of course, from Firumiau. Even though he can be a bit of a nuisance on "Caturday" nights, Firumiau is a sweetheart, and I miss him. I’ve never been able to live in a place in the capital that allows pets, so whenever I visit my mom, I have the privilege of feeling like I have a cat, at least for a few days. That means whenever I visit, I’ll likely bring back new photos for you all; I’ve been sharing him here on Hive since he was just a tiny kitten... I just hope to see him more often 🙏
