Here in my town there are mornings like these, in which one escapes from life and goes out to wander on some path where the mist seems to come from everywhere. Mornings in which memories, and even fears, take some shape and appear drawn here and there... It seems to me that the landscape itself is not aware of what it does, much less the other people who seem to appear without me knowing if they are real or imaginary on the misty paths... I knew old men who spoke of these days in which nights are no longer nights nor days, days, but instead are like intermediate limbos that neither begin nor end. And those old men said that witches used to go on foot then, and people's sins took human form and approached them, and that dead people who had not left, the souls in pain, appeared leaping from the edges of the paths to accompany careless walkers for a few meters and tell them of their debts, their sorrows, and their chains that bind them to an intermediate existence, fleshless but with pains... I, for my part, have seen each one of those things, and perhaps even some more, but my mania as an equanimous observer seems to save me even from the miseries of those beings who do not know where to go, except when the misty mornings gift them bodies to torment and be tormented...

Aquí en mi pueblo hay mañanas como estas, en las que uno se escapa de la vida y sale a deambular en algún camino en donde la niebla parece venir de todas partes. Mañanas en las cuales los recuerdos, y hasta los miedos, toman alguna forma y aparecen dibujados aquí y allá... Me parece a mí que el paisaje mismo no es consciente de lo que hace, mucho menos las otras personas que parecen aparecer sin que yo sepa si son reales o imaginarias en los caminos con niebla... Conocí viejos que hablaban de estos días en los que las noches ya no son noches ni los días, días, sino que son como limbos intermedios que no empiezan ni terminan. Y decían esos viejos que las brujas acostumbraban a ir a pie entonces, y los pecados de las personas cobraban forma humana y se les acercaban, y que gente muerta que no se había ido, las ánimas en pena, aparecían saltando de las orillas de los caminos para acompañar a los caminantes descuidados durante algunos metros y contarles sus deudas, sus tristezas y sus cadenas que los atan a una existencia intermedia, sin carnes pero con dolores... Yo, por mi parte, he visto cada una de esas cosas, y quizás hasta algunas más, pero mi manía de observante ecuánime parece salvarme incluso de las miserias de esos seres que no saben a dónde ir, salvo cuando las mañanas de niebla les regalan cuerpos para atormentar y atormentarse...
