From inside, the heavy oak doors of the grand hall felt like detention. Mitchell stood like a statue. Spine locked, the gold trim of his red uniform scratched his neck; white gloves impeccably crisp tightened around his wrists.

His uncle, the imposing Ambassador Aaronson, watched Mitchell from the balcony, expecting perfection. He was the family’s chosen diplomat for the evening, tasked with welcoming the distinguished dignitaries.

His uncle couldn't have been clearer the day before.

"Nephew, I had my doubts, but you came highly recommended by my sister's family. As the area governors gather tonight, the opportunity to cement the family's political dynasty falls on your shoulders. Yours will be the future face that I'll introduce first. A huge responsibility you know as I don't have a son. Nevertheless, I've confidence in my selection. If all goes well, you'll be our appointed diplomat for the next engagement."

That evening, as Mitchell waited at the entrance, beneath his pressed suit, thinking, I'm not gonna fail this time, a rogue glass of sparkling water from earlier had turned into a minor tickling. His bladder gave an initial notification.

He watched as headlights swept across the frosted glass windows. The sleek black limousine lead car had arrived. The door opened, and the first dignitary stepped out, leaned against the side of the vehicle attempting to adjust his tie while his driver retrieved his medical walker from the trunk.

Mitchell didn't know if it was nerves or anticipation, but his stomach suddenly roiled. Then, the cold sweat broke. An unnaturally cruel thirty minutes of absolute stillness had turned a minor discomfort into an acute, pulsing agony in his lower abdomen.

The nearest restroom was only twenty feet away, just an estimate, past the heavy velvet curtains behind him, yet it might as well have been across town. Leaving his post now would be viewed as an act of unforgivable disobedience; not to mention, ultimate disappointment by his immediate family.

Before they come inside, I can abandon my post and bolt for the washroom, he surmised. But that would forever destroy my family’s reputation. Or, I can stand tall, clench my jaw, and face the absolute agony of delay.

Mitchell had a decision to make.

He took a rigid, trembling step forward, then gripped his hands behind his back, squeezing his knuckles until they turned white to distract from the pressure building inside him.

The gold, elaborate door handle clicked. As the first governor stepped into the warmth of the hall, Mitchell forced his lips into a rigid, trembling smile, praying his body wouldn't betray his bloodline before the first handshake.

But he could suppress the urge no longer. He glanced down the hall.

His thoughts were interrupted by a couple who'd entered with the man leaning heavily on a walking aid. Mitchell didn't hesitate. He rushed over to the gentleman and grabbed his arm, steadying him.

"Can someone assist my husband immediately to the laboratory? the governor's wife spoke urgently.

"I've got you," Mitchell replied quickly. After steadying the rolling walker, he turned to the governor's wife. "Go stand over there, Madam. We'll be back shortly," he stated firmly, not thinking of the dignitary he was issuing orders to or that the place he suggested the governor's wife wait was the greeting spot.

Immediately, she kissed her husband's forehead and left to stand at the entrance. As other guests arrived, she greeted with with courtesy and held brief conversations with those she and her husband were acquainted with.

Three guests later, Mitchell still hadn't returned.

Ambassador Aaronson descended from the balcony. He immediately took stock of the fact that Mitchell had abandoned his post. Furious, he strode over to the entrance.

"Dammit," the Ambassador let slip. "I knew this would happen. He pivoted toward the governor's wife. What are you doing standing here alone, Mrs. Archdavy? I truly apologize for the dreadful lack in judgement of my attendant."

Before he could continue, Mrs. Archdavy smiled and nodded upon noticing her husband at the end of the hallway. Quickly gauging the situation, she stood ready to defend Mitchell on her husband's behalf.

She spoke loudly enough for the other guests to hear.

"What a wonderful young man you chose to greet us this evening and a lovely start to our evening. I was just telling my husband how gracious you were to invite us to your lovely establishment. We'll never forget the service your man stepped in upon our arrival and expertly handled for my husband's needs."

She stared at the Ambassador for a long moment, waiting, daring him to speak ill of Mitchell in front of the crowd.

"And by the way, I thoroughly enjoyed the greeting experience. Always pleasurable to experience something novel. Look forward to the rest of the weekend. And give that young man high praise and a raise. He represented you well this evening."

Whatever argument his uncle had on the tip of his tongue and the anger behind it toward Mitchell vanished two minutes later as he watched his nephew round the corner head toward the foyer. Arm locked with Governor Archdavy, the two were engrossed in conversation, laughing as Mitchell held on tightly.

Oh, I was feeling Mitchell's pain through this story! You built up the tension so well I wished I could put the ambassador in his place. Mitchell is admirable for having the courage to set aside his discomfort to attend to someone who needed his help. Good thing Mrs Archdavy stepped in to defend him before the ambassador could say anything. Sometimes kindness matters more than obedience. Tense and heartwarming, I enjoyed your story.
