Sister Olivia clasped her hands and shook her head while peering from the stone archway into the crowd of girls. She jerked a sharp breath upon spotting nine-year-old twins, Beryl and Meryl Milfern. "This can't be good," she murmured.

Suddenly, screams and laughter erupted.

Forgetting all decorum, she bolted toward the scene, but not in time to prevent both girls from intentionally grabbing and smearing mud on LeeAnn Hawley's pony tails and dropping some into her wash bucket. Another inch and she would have caught the tail end of both girls' uniforms before they scurried off giggling.

Horrified, LeeAnn choked back tears, feeling the slimy mud in her strands and staring at her day's task. Sister Olivia turned to assess the damage. LeeAnn clutched her robe, sobbing. She held LeeAnn close, despite her mud-stained hair.

"Those two need a lesson in kindness," Sister Olivia whispered, disappointed in the girls' antics. This was especially true since they both were just released from detention last week.

That night, the convent was dimly lit by candlelight. Never venturing anywhere alone, the twins walked down the long, drafty hallway to the bathroom.

While inside, Beryl went first, while Meryl leaned against the wall eagerly identifying their next attack victim and plotting the ruse. From the stall, Beryl rejected, "no, not mud again. How about a frog or insect. Gossip is that Melissa will faint at the first sight a them."

Both burst out laughing when suddenly, a soft, spooky wail echoed from an empty stall. "Did you hear that?" Beryl's voice trembled.

"Hear what?" Meryl replied confidently, but scoured the room cautiously.

The toilet in the empty stall flushed. Not once, but twice, followed by the sounds of a sneeze; a hiccup; gruff voice.

But this is the girls' facilities, Beryl's thoughts immediately reconciled. What the heck is going on?

Her stall door flew open. She ran to Meryl and grabbed her hand. "Let get out of here!" she ordered.

The girls tore from the bathroom. Beryl forgot to wash her hands. Meryl forgot to even use the facility.

Halfway down the hall, from around the corner drifted a terrifying sight. It looked like a giant, glowing white shape floating in the air. It had two heads that seemed to move in unison.

"Repent, cruel twins!" a deep, echoed voice boomed from the shape. "The spirits of the convent see how you treat others! Double the trouble brings double the doom!"

The twins shrieked. They began crying, dropped their lanterns, and sprinted down the hall, back to their dormitory room. Placing their heads under the cover, both cried silently hoping that the apparition wouldn't penetrate the door.

Outside, behind the glowing shape, the apparition collapsed into quiet satisfaction. Another nun, Sister Ernestine, stepped out from under the giant white bedsheet, holding the glowing lantern. Sister Olivia joined her. With the megaphone between them, they muffled laughs all the way to the chapel.

"We'll need a bit of forgiveness for our deeds this night, you think?" Sister Ernestine asked piously.

"I truly believe that we've got that covered seeing as we helped two potentially wayward souls find their way back to grace. I'm pretty sure He'll approve," Sister Olivia replied, a twinkle in her eye and grin on her face.

The next morning at breakfast, Beryl and Meryl sat silently. Pale and wide-eyed, each ate with their heads down. LeeAnn noticed them straightaway and pivoted to avoid walking near them for fear she'd be tripped and spill her tray.

To LeeAnn's surprise, simultaneously, the twins glanced up, quickly jumped to their feet, and headed toward her. Frightened, LeeAnn shrank back, but the sisters grabbed her arms and guided her to the seat next to them.

Stunned into silence, LeeAnn just stared wide-eyed at the sisters. Puzzled, she glanced from one to the other as Beryl pulled out the chair while Meryl took her tray and sat it on the table. The twins beckoned for their friends to join them.

When all were seated, Beryl chattered up LeeAnn offering to help with her next washing day load. Meryl offered LeeAnn the biggest piece of fresh bread.

From the kitchen door, Sisters Olivia and Ernestine watched, sharing a secret, holy smile.

Well, a playful little lesson in kindness! It's about time the twins realised that the world doesn't revolve around them and that other children have feelings too. The bathroom scene had me chuckling. So the troublemakers can get scared too? A harmless little scare was all it took to make them rethink their mischievous behaviour.

I enjoyed this short piece. The secret smiles from the nuns at the end were the perfect finishing touch. Beautifully written as always. Do take and have a relaxing weekend. 🌹
