MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "foster".
...When I think of the word "foster", I'm immediately reminded of the concept of support. The most typical use is for a home to assist youth that's termed "foster care" or "foster home". However, the concept of helping in order to achieve a productive output means progress. Moving things along in a positive manner. I share a story along this vein.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 30 September 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3242: foster.
Below is my story:
"What do the damn workers expect of me? I've done all I know or am capable of to foster relations with those greedy bastards. All they do is take, take, take. I'll go out of business at this rate," Lester Hastings predicted.
His questions went unanswered as he glanced across the desk. It wasn't that Josephine Martinez didn't have the answers. She already knew Lester rejected advice. This was especially true when that advice concerned upgrading the financial situations of his plant workers.
Lester cupped the back of his head with his hands.
Is there another angle I should focus on?" he hissed, tossing the day's headline across the desk. The unsuspecting assistant received the company quarterly update upside down. It didn't matter. She'd already read the industry's negative review of Hastings Tubular.
Lester rose suddenly, nearly toppling the chair. His fists pounded the desk, overshadowing the venom in his voice.
"I need you to quiet the rumblings. Promise the union leader whatever he demands."
"Is this the same Lester Hastings standing in front of me that rejected the union's latest contract last month demanding better wages and benefits?"
He flashed a broad, wicked smile. "Unions are as strong as their leadership. Arrange a golf outing with him as guest. I'll introduce him to figures he can approach to further his political ambitions."
"I was under the impression he was an upstanding, ethical leader."
Disappointed she'd ask, he exclaimed, "they all are, until realizing the hidden value of my endorsement."

«¿Qué demonios esperan de mí esos malditos trabajadores? He hecho todo lo que sé y todo lo que puedo para mejorar las relaciones con esos cabrones codiciosos. Lo único que hacen es tomar, tomar y tomar. A este paso, voy a tener que cerrar el negocio», predijo Lester Hastings.
Sus preguntas quedaron sin respuesta mientras echaba un vistazo al otro lado del escritorio. No es que Josephine Martínez no tuviera las respuestas. Ya sabía que Lester rechazaba los consejos. Esto era especialmente cierto cuando dichos consejos se referían a mejorar la situación económica de los trabajadores de su planta.
Lester se llevó las manos a la nuca.
«¿Hay algún otro aspecto en el que deba centrarme?», siseó, lanzando el titular del día al otro lado del escritorio. La desprevenida asistente recibió el informe trimestral de la empresa boca abajo. No importaba. Ya había leído la crítica negativa del sector sobre Hastings Tubular.
Lester se levantó de repente, a punto de volcar la silla. Sus puños golpearon el escritorio, eclipsando el veneno de su voz.
«Necesito que acalles los rumores. Prométele al líder sindical todo lo que pida».
«¿Es este el mismo Lester Hastings que tengo delante y que el mes pasado rechazó el último convenio del sindicato, en el que se exigían mejores salarios y prestaciones?»
