A few days ago, I featured the bananas we harvested from our garden. Today, when I checked them, I noticed that some were already ripe while others were still unripe. I was already craving bananas, so I decided to make use of what we had and prepare something simple with them.
There are some varieties of bananas that are already sweet even when they are still slightly unripe, but these bananas were not sweet enough to eat as they were. So, I ate the ripe ones right away and used the unripe ones to make mashed bananas.
Traditionally, mashed banana is made with boiled banana, sugar, grated coconut, and margarine. However, we didn’t have any of those three ingredients available at the time. So, I decided to be resourceful and just use whatever was available in our kitchen.
Luckily, we had some honey, so that’s what I used.
I started by mashing the bananas using a wooden mortar and pestle. Once they were slightly mashed, I added some honey and continued mixing everything together by mashing it a little more.
When I finally tasted it, I was pleasantly surprised. It was simple, but the sweetness was just right. The honey added a nice flavor and made the mashed banana even more enjoyable.
Sometimes, we don’t always have to follow the traditional way of preparing a dish. We can simply work with what we have and be creative with the ingredients available in the kitchen. Being resourceful can turn something very simple into something delicious without needing to add a lot of ingredients.
My mother also loved it, and she actually finished the first batch I made! And honestly, I can’t blame her because mashed banana really does taste good with honey.
Sometimes, the simplest recipes are the ones that taste the best.
