When I read the description of this prompt, the first person that came to my mind was Trump.
Trump? Does he have veto power?
I'm not deep into politics and the exhibition of political power, but I've seen this veto power, although it may not be the way other people saw it, come into play. As much as I like how almost every country depends on Donald Trump and the USA to help resolve issues affecting them, I also don't like how Trump and the USA exhibit this power, which has made it appear as though the world has agreed that Trump is their assistant God on earth.
Like I said, I'm not deep into politics and the wars and hatred it has generated between nations. I once saw Donald Trump bragging about taking over the rulership of certain countries because he feels the leadership of those countries is not doing a good job. A lot of citizens of those countries counted down to his intention, while some happily welcomed the idea. How can a president of a nation casually seize the right to rule other sovereign countries against the will of their citizens, just because he has the power to do so? This kind of thing almost happened in Nigeria, and although I was hoping he would do so because the citizens of Nigeria, myself included, were tired of the situation of things, it doesn't just appear to be okay if he gets to do something like that.
The FIFA World Cup that took place a few months ago gave us some insight into this veto power of Trump, where he had a major say in the tournament and there was seemingly nothing anyone could do about it. He practically brought down the law of the governing body of football by cancelling a red card given to a player from the USA, so that the player would be allowed to play in the next game, which he was supposed to miss. Everyone got angry and aired their disappointment at the governing body, but nothing could be done because the one who has power above every country in the world had spoken.
So, veto power is bad, right?
While someone in such a position could possibly use the power to overturn something for a positive outcome, the people who possess this power usually use it to their own advantage, which sometimes may appear to everyone as if the person is helping a situation generally. At the end of the day, it shows that the execution of the power is for personal gain.
In Nigeria, the president, especially the type that we have currently, exhibits this power once in a while.
There was a time when the president of my nation declared a state of emergency in a particular state in Nigeria and removed the sitting governor, something that ordinarily could not be done. Yes, his reason for removing the governor, particularly, was because he wanted peace to reign in the state, but everyone knew his agenda was to remove the governor because he wasn't in his party.
