Celebrando la vida/Celebrating life

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community. I hope you are all enjoying an excellent day.

A friend wrote to me a few days ago to invite me to her birthday party, and how could I refuse if we hadn't seen each other in a few months. So I accepted. I prepared a small gift and off I went. What a beautiful thing yesterday's party was. I'm still feeling sore all over, but with a joy that doesn't fit in my chest. It turns out that my friend Nercys, my soul sister, turned 50, the half-century mark, as we say around here.

She and I have known each other for some years now; from the start there was tremendous chemistry and empathy between us. And I can assure you that woman has more energy than any young person, and I'm not exaggerating one bit.

Look, three years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was a hard blow, one of those that leaves you breathless. But she stood firm like a royal palm, with an attitude I've never seen in anyone. She went through her treatments, had surgery, and today she is perfectly fine, thank God. And not just fine: she's radiant, with a vitality that many twenty-somethings would envy. That's why the party was a celebration of life. It was an overflow of hope, a great big "here I am."

Since my friend lives somewhat far away, I went prepared to stay over. When I arrived there were already several people there. And as at any respectable Cuban party, nothing was missing. There was ice-cold beer for the women and rum for the men. The caldosa turned out spectacular, with its cassava, its malanga, and its meat well seasoned with two pig heads—I even went back for thirds. And the crema de vie… oh, my mother, the crema de vie! I love that sweet flavor mixed with rum. But that one you drink slowly, because it creeps up on you inside and gives you a nice little buzz—even so, I had a few small glasses.

The best part came when they brought out the piñata. Yes, you read that right: a piñata, but for adults. There were no children there; it was just us, with our gray hairs and our extra pounds. And when it burst, it was a shower of treats, but also of grown-up things: little bottles, cigars, candies. We laughed until our bellies hurt, and that's when the real fun began.

The music didn't stop for a single second. And I, who am a whirlwind and a die-hard music lover, showed off my best moves. I danced until I was exhausted, I swear. I danced with the birthday girl, with the neighbors, with whoever asked me and even alone. I sweated buckets, but every second was worth it. Seeing my friend there, enjoying herself, hugging everyone, with that smile that lights up her face, filled my soul.

I had a great time, truly. But beyond the rum and the caldosa, what I take with me is the example of that woman. That at 50, after a really ugly storm, she's still here, more alive than ever, teaching us that life is celebrated every day. Cheers to my friend-sister, and may she have many more!
