Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community. I hope everyone is enjoying an excellent day.
Every night, my father and I sit on the porch of the house, which is on the second floor, to talk, get some air, and "enjoy" the blackout. Yes, because it's "normal" for us to have no electricity any given night. That's how we live in Cuba. Sometimes we admire the moon and the stars, but last night was darker than an upside-down cauldron, one of those we use for cooking with charcoal. Not a single star, not a sliver of moon, nothing at all.
The whole neighborhood seemed to be stuffed inside a black sack, though there's always some privileged person with an EcoFlow. On nights like that you grope your way around, eyes open but unable to see past your own nose. I was fighting off the heat and the mosquitoes with a fan, when suddenly the sky began to brighten far off in the distance, above the trees.
At first I thought it was just me, a trick of the eyes. But no sir, it kept on. The sky flickered on and off like a loose light bulb, a glow that lasted a second and then vanished. And the strangest thing of all, you couldn't hear a single thunderclap. Nothing, not a sound, not a boom, not the slightest rumble. Total silence. Apparently there was a distant storm, far away, but close enough for you to see the lightning without hearing the noise. Then I remembered what my grandmother Severina used to say: when there's no thunder, it means the thing is far away.
And there we stayed, the two of us, like a pair of fools, staring up at the sky. And me taking photos. Catching lightning is no easy task, no. They're very fleeting. And it went on for a long, long while, more than an hour. Every time one appeared, the whole night would light up in patches. That glow was like when you strike a match in a dark room, a moment of clarity and then the blackness again, blacker still. And every time it lit up, you could see the zinc roofs, and then darkness swallowed it all again.
But the best part came afterward. In one of those moments when the sky grew brighter, the giant ceiba tree that the neighbor has in his yard was outlined. Holy Mary, what a beautiful thing! The ceiba is a monster, it's been there since before I was born, with branches that look like a giant's arms. And when the lightning flashed, a strange shadow was cast over it, as if a ghost had climbed onto its back. The branches looked black against the bright sky, and the whole canopy seemed to move with the glow, even though there wasn't a breath of wind.
There my father and I stayed for a good while, hunting lightning like two kids, waiting for the next flash to take photos and see that shadow over the ceiba. And when the storm finally moved off and the sky went still and black again, we were left wanting more, waiting for a thunderclap that never came.
