Cielo empedrado, suelo mojado/Paved Sky, Wet Ground (Eng-Esp)

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again. I hope you're all having a wonderful Sunday.

Those who don't know the Cuban sky shouldn't speak of rain. Because here, when the sky takes on that look where the clouds seem like stones—paved, as if someone had laid gray slabs across the firmament—there's no stopping the downpour. It's a law of life, one of those that can't be negotiated. I've watched my mother step out into the yard, glance up at the sky, see the sun burning the stones, and declare: "It's paved, daughter. Bring in the laundry or it'll get wet." And she's never wrong. An hour later, it starts to rain. That's just how the Cuban weather is—as much ours, as much a part of the landscape, as son music or coffee.

Some days dawn with that sun that blisters your fingertips, when even the chickens look for shade. But suddenly, as if by magic or some mischievous little saint, the sky begins to pave over. Those clouds that look like gray cobblestones, packed tight against each other, as if someone were laying a floor up there. And you look and you know. You don't need the weather report or the TV meteorologist. You can smell it, feel it in your bones, in that dampness that clings to your skin like a hug.

No, señor. Es de la que cae a cántaros.

"Paved sky, wet ground," say the peasants and the old-timers, and they're not talking about a street in Old Havana. It's the announcement. The preamble. The prelude. Like when church bells ring and you know it's time for Mass. That's how it works. A fresh little breeze starts blowing through the cracks, the leaves on the trees turn over, and the dogs get restless, as if they can sniff the water coming. Then comes the first big drop—the fat one that lands with a thud on the tin roof. And after that, the deluge. But not that fine rain that wets without soaking. No, sir. This is the kind that comes down in buckets.

The beautiful thing is that Cubans already have their system. The one on a bicycle looks for an awning, the one on the bus resigns himself, and the one at home opens the door, puts out a bucket to catch water, and sits down to wait for it to let up. Because here, nobody races against the clock when the sky is paved. That would be fighting with nature, and Cubans are too wise for that.

And when it clears, the ground is left wet and shiny, the city gets a bit of a wash and takes on that smell of wet earth—like a perfume I absolutely love. The sun comes back out, but the ground still holds the memory of the downpour. Puddles reflect the sky, which is already clearing up. And you take a deep breath, as if the water had washed away not just the streets, but also the sorrows.

Because that's what Cuba's climate is like—unpredictable, intense. I always enjoy the rain. When I see the paved sky, I don't curse it; I give thanks. If I'm at home, I sit and watch how the water dances on the rooftops, because even if the ground gets wet, life goes on. Anyone born here knows it from childhood: the paved sky is the signature of a sure downpour, coming to remind us that everything has its reason for being.
