En días reciente tuve la oportunidad de ver el filme que les trago hoy. Y creanme que si hay una película que te atrapa desde el primer minuto, es esta de Farinelli. Este filme de 1994, cuenta la historia de Carlo Broschi, el castrato más famoso del siglo XVIII. Y ojo, no es solo una pelicula de época con pelucas y vestidos bonitos, es un drama intenso que juega con la belleza y la tragedia a partes iguales. Es la historia de la vida de un hombre roto. Farinelli fue un dios de la ópera barroca. Su voz, de una pureza y flexibilidad sobrenaturales, cautivó a Europa en el siglo XVIII. Más que un virtuoso, era un artista de conmovedora expresividad que podía hacer llorar o desmayar a su público, tanto a hombres como a mujeres, y esas escenas se ven en la película.

Recently, I had the chance to see the film I'm bringing you today. And believe me, if there's a movie that grabs you from the very first minute, it's this one: Farinelli. This 1994 film tells the story of Carlo Broschi, the most famous castrato of the 18th century. And mind you, this isn't just a period piece with wigs and pretty dresses—it's an intense drama that balances beauty and tragedy in equal measure. It's the story of a broken man's life. Farinelli was a god of Baroque opera. His voice, of supernatural purity and flexibility, captivated 18th-century Europe. More than a virtuoso, he was an artist of moving expressiveness who could make his audiences—both men and women—weep or faint, and those scenes are shown in the film.
La cinta empieza con una escena que ya de por sí es toda una declaración de intenciones: Farinelli, con su voz prodigiosa, compitiendo contra un trompetista en una plaza pública. La voz del joven hace que el mismísimo Händel se fija en él. Pero el meollo de la historia no es solo el éxito, sino la relación de amor-odio con su hermano Ricardo. Resulta que Riccardo, un compositor frustrado, fue el responsable de que Carlo fuera castrado de niño para preservar su voz de ángel. Y para darle más intensidada la historia, los dos hermanos tienen un ritual bastante turbio: Farinelli, hermoso y ateactivo, seduce a las mujeres, pero es Riccardo quien... bueno, quien termina el trabajo. Una dinámica familiar que es puro veneno y dinamita, la verdad.
The movie opens with a scene that is itself a bold statement of intent: Farinelli, with his prodigious voice, competing against a trumpeter in a public square. The young man's voice catches the attention of none other than Handel himself. But the heart of the story isn't just about success—it's about the love-hate relationship with his brother Riccardo. It turns out that Riccardo, a frustrated composer, was the one responsible for Carlo being castrated as a child to preserve his angelic voice. And to add even more intensity to the story, the two brothers have a rather dark ritual: Farinelli, handsome and attractive, seduces the women, but it's Riccardo who... well, who finishes the job. A family dynamic that is pure poison and dynamite, to be honest.
Algo que difruté mucho del filme fue la época que pasó en España, cantando cada noche para el rey Felipe V, quien estaba sumido en una profunda depresión, y a quien Farinelli logró sacar de su melancolía con la misma canción. Su leyenda trasciende la técnica, encarna el poder absoluto de la música para sanar el alma, un eco de belleza que perdura en el tiempo.
One thing I really enjoyed about the film was the time Farinelli spent in Spain, singing every night for King Philip V, who was sunk in a deep depression—and whom Farinelli managed to lift out of his melancholy with the very same song. His legend transcends technique; it embodies the absolute power of music to heal the soul, an echo of beauty that endures through time.
Visualmente, el film es espectacular. La fotografía captura a la perfección el sentido de la época y la decadencia del Barroco, con unos escenarios que parecen cuadros, obras de artes dignas de exhibirse en cualquier museo de renombre. Pero donde la película se destaca más es en la parte musical. Al no tener grabaciones de la voz original de Farinelli y para recrear esa voz imposible de castrato, supe que los técnicos mezclaron digitalmente la voz de un contratenor y una soprano. El resultado es hipnótico, una voz que suena etérea, con unos registros únicos e impresionantes y que te pone los pelos de punta. Esa voz el alma de la película.
Visually, the film is spectacular. The cinematography perfectly captures the spirit of the era and the decadence of the Baroque, with settings that look like paintings—works of art worthy of any renowned museum. But where the film truly stands out is in its musical aspect. Since no recordings of Farinelli's original voice exist, and to recreate that impossible castrato voice, I learned that the technicians digitally mixed the voices of a countertenor and a soprano. The result is hypnotic—a voice that sounds ethereal, with unique and astonishing registers that give you goosebumps. That voice is the soul of the film.
Hubo momentos muy dramáticos en los que lloré y que prefiero no contarles para que los descubran ustedes mismos si se deciden a ver este magnífico filme. Ver Farinelli me dejó con una experiencia agridulce. Me dejó con la sensación de haber escuchado algo divino, pero también con el amargo regusto de una vida marcada por la traición. No es una película para todo el mundo, pero si te gustan los dramas históricos con una banda sonora brutal, este te va a encantar.
There were very dramatic moments when I cried, and I'd rather not tell you about them so you can discover them for yourselves if you decide to watch this magnificent film. Watching Farinelli left me with a bittersweet experience. It left me with the feeling of having heard something divine, but also with the bitter aftertaste of a life marked by betrayal. It's not a film for everyone, but if you like historical dramas with a brutal soundtrack, this one will blow you away.
