Tertulia en el Centro Dulce María Loinaz/Gathering at the Dulce María Loinaz Center (Esp-Eng)

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you all again.

Well, imagine that yesterday I was invited to a tertulia that is held every month at the former house of the Cuban poet Dulce María Loinaz. Honestly, I didn’t really know what to do because it’s quite far from my house, but since I really enjoy this kind of activity, I went. I arrived, and the first thing I felt was the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Just with that, you walk in with a good attitude.

The room was full. There were young people, older men, even children. Everyone settled into chairs. At the front, there were some tables with an embroidered tablecloth and a lit candle. That’s where it all began. The first to jump in was a girl with long braids who read a poem by Benedetti. She did it with such tenderness that even the toughest person in the group sighed. Then came a man with a radio-announcer voice who gifted us a short story by Cortázar. He left us all with our mouths open, because the ending was really tangled and no one knew whether to laugh, cry, or stay quiet.

Then came oral storytelling. A tall man with a hat stood in the middle of the venue and began to tell a story about his grandmother in the countryside. He didn’t read anything; he had it all in his memory. He imitated voices, made animal sounds, crouched down, jumped, raised his arms. The audience looked visibly moved. In that moment I understood that oral storytelling is a separate art. It’s not the same to read a text as to feel it in your body and give it away like that, without paper.

And when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the trova arrived. A couple of young guys took out a guitar and a cajón. They began improvising verses about what they saw: the candle, the coffee, a girl’s laughter, an old man’s hat. People responded with clapping, choruses, jokes. There was no ego there; we were all part of the same river. Trova, for those who don’t know it, is like a sung conversation. You laugh, you get emotional, and sometimes you even cry, but you always come out with a happy heart.

The most beautiful thing was that no one was glued to their cell phone. No one interrupted. We all listened attentively, as if every word were a gift. There was love poetry, scary stories, travel narratives, and even a lady who plucked up the courage to sing a décima she had learned from her mother. Joy could be felt in the air. It wasn’t a noisy joy, like those parties with reggaeton. It was a quiet joy, the kind that fills your chest and makes you feel that life is worth living.

At the end, we went out to the patio and stayed a while longer eating bread and talking about anything. No one wanted to leave. I left there with a smile that lasted until the next morning. And I thought: how much we need this. To gather without hurry, without screens, without competing. Just to share what we carry inside: a story, a verse, a tale, a tune. The tertulia wasn’t just an event. It was and is a way of understanding that culture is not only in museums or expensive books. It’s in people’s voices, in shared laughter, in grandparents’ memory, in hands that applaud.

If you’re ever invited to a tertulia, don’t think twice. Go. Bring something to read or to tell, or simply bring your desire to listen. Because there, between coffee and verses, one heals a little from hurry and noise; one heals the soul a little from so much daily business and trouble. It was an afternoon of stories, verses, and lots of good vibes.

It’s encounters like these that are truly worthwhile, and as I said at the end of the post, they fill your heart and soul, because you don’t need to visit museums or buy expensive books, all you need is the desire to share the culture of each place. The most wonderful thing is all the people who took the time to read or tell stories, and in doing so, everyone shared a moment that brings a smile to your face and makes life, and everything it has to offer, all the more enjoyable.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, which, as I always say, is what really matters. A big hug!💗
