The last time I imagined a reunion with childhood friends and classmates I laughed because I have already been there. I can't forget the high school reunion we attended and it was what a shock to learn our conversations took 24 hours. Yes! 24 hours chatting, laughing, and reminiscing about old times.
Prior to the reunion, I asked myself how it would feel to reconnect with some of my childhood friends. We had all matured and ventured into new lives. We wore different hats, had different jobs, and different life experiences. We were no longer the students who used to sit together in class, laugh at each other's misadventures, and share class notes and school activities with one another. We had changed quite a bit, but one thing was clear when we came together: old memories refused to die.
It was initially just talking about everything. "How have you been?" "What are you doing?" "What are you up to all these years?" But one memory will turn into a spiral of memories. Those classic moments, those crazy high school stories, the things that you and I did to make our high school days memorable; We forgot the time but we can't stop talking.
What I was surprised at was that all had come back so naturally and that it was as if we had never been away for so long. We could laugh over things that happened some thirty years ago and that only the smallest of minutiae was a reason to smile. It was a relief that what we had was still there.
That reunion showed me that friends are never truly gone, even if the years and distance get between you. We all move to new cities, start new jobs, get married, and have children. We don't talk every day, but that doesn't erase the friendship.
What would I tell someone if they wanted to know how long a reunion can keep the fun going? I would say it depends on the people and the memories being created. In our situation, we were on the phone for a good 24 hours and those memories will always be cherished.
Reunion isn't just a get together. It is an opportunity to come back, even if only for a short while, to a glorious chapter of our lives. We cannot go back in time, but we can go back to the times of our happiness.
Often, the most wonderful friendships don't require the perfect venue or costly festivities. All they require are familiar faces, kind hearts and stories to share.
