Wczoraj wspominaliśmy z żoną początki naszego dwuletniego pobytu w Wiedniu. I jak bardzo niefartowny był to okres. Mieliśmy plany zwiedzać ile się da. Austrie i sąsiednie kraje, ale szlag wszystko trafił przez COVID. Później zapał opadł mocno opadł.

Zerknąłem na zdjęcia z okresu jeszcze przed pandemią. Zdąrzyliśmy jeszcze zobaczyć kilka miejsc w samym Wiedniu, zanim wirus doprowadził do zamknięcia wszystkich w domach. Znalazłem cos, co jest rzadko spotykane w zbiorach z tamtego okresu - czarno-białe zdjęcia Wiednia.

Pamiętam dlaczego obrobiłem je w czerni i bieli. Zabrałem się za ich edycję już w trakcie „rządów” korona wirusa. Był to okres pozbawiony kolorów i życie naprawdę straciło wtedy barwy. Te czarno-białe zdjęcia miały to odzwierciedlać.

Większość z tych zdjęć powstała w okolicach pałacu Hofburg. Wtedy jeszcze życie toczyło się normalnie. Nikt nie spodziewał się, że niedługo świat obróci się do góry nogami. Kilka dni po tym, jak je zrobiłem, WHO wydało komunikat o zagrożeniu międzynarodowym. Naprawdę poczuliśmy wtedy smak grozy, jaki ze sobą niósł.

Yesterday, my wife and I were reminiscing about the beginning of our two-year stay in Vienna. And what an incredibly unlucky period it turned out to be. We had planned to travel as much as possible, exploring Austria and its neighboring countries, but everything fell apart because of COVID. Afterward, our enthusiasm just faded away.

I took a look at some photos from before the pandemic. We managed to see a few spots in Vienna itself before the virus forced everyone to stay home. I found something that’s quite rare among the images from that time: black-and-white photographs of Vienna.

I remember why I processed them in black and white. I started editing them while the coronavirus was in full swing. A time devoid of color, when life truly lost its vibrancy. These black-and-white photos were meant to reflect that.

Most of these shots were taken around the Hofburg Palace. Back then, life was still carrying on as usual; no one suspected that the world was about to be turned upside down. Just a few days after I took them, the WHO issued an alert regarding an international emergency. That was when we truly felt the sense of dread that came along with it.
