Just when I thought working in this field would make me lose weight, I actually spend 10% of the time discovering new culinary delights in each cities I visited/worked from. Typically in this job, as a consultant, we're often shown around the best place to eat in each cities and the best part for me is that it's paid/included in my work.
While I was visiting Tasikmalaya, the locals took me to try Kupat Tahu Mangunreja. It's their local dishes made of compressed rice cake with tofu, bean sprouts topped with peanut sauce. The difference between this Kupat Tahu and the rest from Indonesian version is that this one has thicker sauce with rustic texture. Apparently, according to the locals who used to work for their advertisement campaign, this place has existed since the 50's and they do not open any other branches. The secret is in the peanut sauce that they simmer for hours before being poured over the kupat or compressed rice and its topping. Apparently, it is one of the signature and must-try dishes in Kabupaten Tasikmalaya.
As a visitor, the place is also located strategically within their main provincial road. Their building is overlooking the Sundanese style rice field and it has such a tranquil vibe.
The price of the Kupat Tahu is definitely on the pricier side but it's given because their history and their local ways of cooking it. So, it's not the place for those who are looking for a hearty meal at a cheap price. It's a meal when you visit one time to get a taste of local's culinary delight.
From this place I learned that tea is free. So, you do not have to order tea/drink if you want to because the price you're paying in many Sundanese restaurant include plain tea with it. At first, it confused me because I didn't even order tea but it's apparently the custom there that if you order a meal, it always comes with tea.
If you visit Tasikmalaya, don't forget to try this particular restaurant and their Kupat Tahu, a local delights and especially, if you love anything with peanut sauce.
