I remember reading this horror and mystery story by José León Cano many years ago, when I was a teenager. I also recall that it was part of the *Biblioteca Universal de Misterio y Terror* (Universal Library of Mystery and Horror) collection; it came into my hands because my father had it on his bookshelf, having purchased it at a second-hand bookstore. It served, in a sense, as my introduction to horror literature.
Recuerdo haber leído este cuento de terror y misterio de José León Cano hace muchos años, cuando era adolescente, recuerdo tambien que estaba incluido en la Biblioteca Universal de Misterio y Terror pero llegó a mis mans porque mi papá lo tenía entre sus estantes de libros y lo había adquirido en una tienda de libros de segunda mano, fue, digamoslo así, mis inicios en la literatura de terror.
Overview/Resumen
The narrative immerses us in the horror of witnessing an atrocity: a man not only commits one of humanity’s gravest sins—matricide—but also decapitates his victim in a fit of madness. Throughout the story, we witness the crime as recounted by the murderer himself; this adds a layer of intrigue to the reading experience, while simultaneously making it all the more macabre.
El relato nos sumerge en el horror de ser testigos de una atrocidad, un hombre no solo comete uno de los pecados más grandes de la humanidad, el matricidio, sino que además la decapita en un acto de locura, a lo largo de todo el relato somos testigos del crimen descrito por el propio asesino, lo cuál le da un toque más de interés a la lectura pero a la vez lo vuelve más macabro.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
The story unfolds within an oppressive atmosphere—one that, in a way, leaves you feeling just as disturbed as the narrator—who is also the murderer—himself. This isn’t supernatural horror meant to scare us with ghosts or demonic apparitions (though those are certainly terrifying in their own right); rather, it plunges us into a far more visceral kind of horror. My God! Murdering anyone is a heinous act, but attacking the very person who gave you life is surely even worse—and to top it all off, he cuts off her head. What’s more, I recall a scene that truly shocked me: in another fit of madness, he ends up tossing his mother’s head into the fireplace, watching as it slowly melts away... I mean—wow! Absolutely brutal. 😱
El relato está narrado en una atmósfera opresiva, lo cuál de cierta manera te hace sentir tan perturbado como el propio narrador/asesino, pero no es un terror sobrenatural que pretende asustarnos con fantasmas o apariciones demoniacas (lo cuál también es aterrador, desde luego) pero este relato pretende sumergirnos en un terror más visceral, ¡Dios mío! si ya asesinar a cualquier persona es un acto terrible, atacar a a quella que te dio la vida debe serlo apun peor, pero para colmo él le cortó la cabeza, y no slo eso, recuerdo que hay una escena que realmente me impactó, pues él, en un arrevato de locura más, termina arrojando la cabeza de la madre al fuego de la chimenea, y entonces la contempla derretirse poco a poco... eso es ¡Uff! Brutal 😱
However, the narrative is expertly crafted to help us understand—in a sense—why the killer acted as he did. This is not meant as a justification—for there is none—but rather to offer insight into the workings of such a distorted psyche: how his mind blurs reality, how everything becomes warped within his twisted, dissociated inner world, ultimately normalizing—and even rendering mundane—his macabre deeds. In short, the narrative is perfectly designed to unsettle the reader; in fact, it includes a disclaimer warning that the content may be disturbing to some.
Pero el relato está perfectamente diseñado para que, de cierta manera entendamos porqué el asesino lo hizo, no a modo de justificación, porque no la hay, sino para que entendamos como funciona la psique distorcionada de alguien así, como su mente desdibuja la realidad, como todo se va deformando en su interior, en su psique retorcida y disociada, normalizando e incluso cotidianizando los macabros hechos. En síntesis, está perfectamente diseñado para generar incomodidad en el lector y de hech tiene un disclaimer que advierte el hecho de que el contenido puede herir suceptibilidades
In short, it’s a relatively short story, but its content leaves you thinking for days on end. What gave me the most food for thought was the subject of mental illness—and how much people tend to underestimate it, especially in the past—even though it can end up being a true nightmare. En fin, es un relato más o menos corto pero cuyo contenido te deja pensando por muchos días. Lo que más me hizo reflexionar es el tema de las enfermedades mentales y lo mucho que las personas las subestiman, en especial en el pasado, a pesar de que pueden terminar siendo una verdadera pesadilla.
