I am definitely really enjoying this book of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe; I am a great fan of Gothic literature, and for that, "Extraordinary Tales" is the perfect choice. Today, I would like to analyze the story "The Masque of the Red Death."
Overview/Resumen
A bizarre disease, which rapidly escalated into a plague, is ravaging a kingdom. Its symptoms are unmistakable: sharp pains, vertigo, and—most notably, the feature that gives this strange pestilence its name—a peculiar hemorrhaging through the pores of the skin, causing red stains to appear on the victims' faces. The disease is so lethal that it kills within just half an hour. The populace is in despair, but Prospero, the king, chooses not to help them; instead, he retreats to a remote, fortified abbey, taking with him a thousand healthy courtiers—effectively turning a blind eye to his people and their suffering. At one point, the king hosts a masquerade ball to entertain his guests, held across a suite of seven chambers, each decorated in a different color (blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and black—the last featuring scarlet-hued windows). At midnight, a figure draped in a blood-spattered shroud bursts into the festivities—a figure everyone immediately associates with the "Red Death" itself. Emboldened by the challenge, the king pursues the intruder, sword in hand, through the seven chambers; suddenly, he falls down dead, and in the same instant, all the guests perish as well.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
There is a great deal of information that can be analyzed in this story, but let us begin with the most obvious point. What is the function of a leader—whether a monarch or a president? Their primary duty is to look after the common well-being of their nation, not to flee like a coward. Prospero (the king) did not even make an effort to find concrete solutions; he did not summon physicians, nor did he call for investigations—not even after he had retreated to the abbey where he confined himself. Instead, he devoted himself to worldly pleasures and recreation. His sole purpose was to entertain his guests—nothing more. He never cared whether his subjects—those still alive—were starving, or how they might fend off potential enemies in the absence of their king; yet, before the Red Death arrived, he had almost certainly exploited them by collecting taxes.
On the other hand, there is the Red Death itself: lethal, relentless, swift, infallible, and, above all, INEVITABLE. Through his tale, Edgar Allan Poe reminds us that no one can escape death; it overtakes us all, regardless of race, creed, or social standing. Prospero was arrogant and haughty, believing his own cunning sufficient to defeat death itself. Furthermore—a point I overlooked in my summary, yet one of great importance—the figure who arrived wearing a burial shroud was later stripped of it; to their horror, those present discovered that there was nothing beneath the shroud. This signifies that death is not a physical adversary that can be overcome; it simply exists, and it befalls everyone alike.
And finally, there are the seven rooms of the party and the pendulum clock, which emitted a lugubrious sound each time it struck the hour. I believe these seven rooms represent the stages of life itself—from youth to the end—while the clock represents time, which, much like death, is relentless and accompanies us through every stage of our lives; time marks both the beginning and the end. The lugubrious sound that punctuated the festivities was likely a harbinger of the fatal destiny awaiting everyone present—a reminder of their own pettiness in shutting themselves away in that abbey while ignoring the suffering of others.
Well, that concludes my analysis; I hope you enjoyed it, and please feel free to share your thoughts if you’d like. Have an excellent and successful weekend!
