Punishment Or Rehabilitation? The Thin Line Between Justice And Injustice.

What an interesting topic to hop on this well... About criminals, why they're sent to prison, if they should be punished or what exactly is the main purpose of imprisoning them. Looking at the topic, a lot of things seems to be there, talk of punishment, correction, rehabilitation... And the likes, and for me I would say that justice should involve everything. Yeah, the prison should be a place where people go to so as to face the consequences of their actions and if possible or where possible become a better human after serving their term/punishment.

Another thing I would love to say is that it should as well depend on the offense committed, you can't treat someone who stole a cube of Maggi the same punishment you would give someone who robbed a bank, you can't punish someone who stole a hundred naira the same punishment you would give someone who has taken another person's life. And here I would to cite Nigeria as an example. Here in Nigeria, we've seen a lot of cases of terrorist who had killed thousands of people, tortured them and all being said to have been rehabilitated and integrated back into the society, whereas the families of the deceased are still mourning their lost loved ones.

Please, how do you make such a person or family feel that the person responsible for their sadness is now walking free around after few months/years of being imprisoned. For me, such offenses should be followed with very serious consequences, such people who had the mind and effrontery to take lives shouldn't be allowed to walk free too, death penalty should as well be their portion, either death by hanging, by firing squad or life imprisonment. But then, it is most times not so here, and we often find people who commit little or no crime at all being remanded in prison for years... It now seems like justice itself has now become another form of injustice.

That being said, I'm not saying rehabilitation isn't good, I'm not saying people don't deserve second chance, but then not all. If someone commits a serious crime, give them the justice they deserve, if on the long run you see them to be remorseful and willing to turn a new leaf, rehabilitating them can be helpful, what I'm saying is we should only give those who actually deserve that second chance the chance to rebuild themselves and be a better human, not like the Nigerian government having hundreds of repentant terrorists at a time.

Justice should remain what it is... Justice. Offenders should be held accountable, we shouldn't allow offenders to go scot free or keep forgiving them, if we do that, then we're just encouraging more crimes like the Nigerian government who see terrorist and still leave them be or negotiate with them, while also letting go of corrupt leaders so they could embezzle more of public funds. We really need a system that knows when to rehabilitate, punish and when to be fair.

You’re right, punishing people according to the crime the commit is very important to consider when dealing with offenders. Rehabilitation alone can not erase what they have done, because if they are not being punished, people will begin to see crime as a normal thing.
