The topic about if we really have a free will or just scared/afraid of the consequences of our actions is one that's very deep. And thinking about it now, a lot of people kind of feel like we'd have it while some are of the opinion that we do not. And both sides do have their reasons for their stance. For me, I have always felt like we all are supposed to have that freedom to choose what we want, how to live our life, make our own decisions and all of that. Because at the end of the day, we're not a programmed robot that everything has been decided for. But then again, when you give it a more deeper thoughts, you will see what being free actually means, then you will see or know how free we actually are... Or maybe we're not.
We all have one thing or the other that we really want to do but we cannot do them, reason being that we know what would be the aftermath. What I mean is, it's not as if we can't do it, we actually can, but we're most times scared/afraid of that it will cost us, and where it would eventually lead us. A very simple example is someone who's doing a well paying job he/she doesn't love. Such person even though do not love what he's/she's doing would be scared of leaving the job since it is definitely paying their bills, and why can't they leave... Simply because they're scared of going jobless, of going broke, of not being able to handle their responsibilities again.
Another simple sample is someone who really has something to say, but knew within him/her that if they should say it then the relationship between them and the tijet person would definitely be destroyed, and that would make them remain silent. Checking both situations/samples very well, you will see that both actually have the freedom to choose, but the consequences makes choosing somehow difficult.
If you ask me, I'd think we actually free will, not just as simple as we make it look/expect it to be, or let's just say the free will we actually have is kinda different from the definition of the freewill we actually have. For instance now, a lot of things often determines/influence our decisions.... Talk of our upbringings, our financial capabilities, our environments, the religion we practice, fear, the environment we're in, people around us and a lot more are things that often influence our decisions. And that's why sometimes we make choices that we do not really/actually want, but because they seem like the safest options.... We go for it.
I will still like to add that maybe depending on the situation or choices we're making, it's consequences shouldn't always stop us. Most of the times, these things are just there to remind us that our actions does have consequences, and that there's always a price to pay. So maybe true freedom isn't about doing everything we want without giving it a second thought, but about making a choice with the knowledge and consciousness of what may/will follow it and being able to take responsibility.
So, we'd have freewill, just that at the end of the day, it is one that's being guided and tested by the things that we stand to lose. Because it sure would be different if we take out the fear of what will/may happen if we actually do what we want.
