I have Always come many situations where where someone, most especially celebrities did something wrong and the masses begin to bash and condemn them online. Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of cases like that, where the internet community will come together and decide that someone should no longer be supported. When I first saw the topic “Cancel Culture”, I never knew it has a specific name. Anyways, it’s an interesting topic to write about.
Things Online move faster than what we can imagine, just a little spark of information can spread wildly like fire, people would have drawn conclusions from their own point of view without giving the person chance to explain. In the process of condemning the person, you’ll start to see different pictures and video clips about the person. The internet can even dig up something that happened many years ago to prove that the person deserves to be cancelled. Sometimes I wonder how there were able to get those pictures and videos. That’s to show how careful we should be with the things we post online, because the internet never forgets.
Things online can get more worse, especially when what they did was harmful or disturbing . At that point, they are not even ready to hear from the person, if possible they are given the chance, they’ll be ready to make it tit for tat. Once the news is all over the internet, everyone will have something to say, even when they are not to sure of what happened. I have also seen situations where people go beyond criticising the person, they went as far as threatening their family members or anyone related to them online, that’s one the craziest part of it .
Honestly , I’m not in support of someone who , but I believe there way we can still hold them accountable for their offense without being too extra. But we as humans, we are always carried away by our emotions, the anger in us will make us think that something needs to be done immediately , especially when we believe the person might escape justice. However, I believe there are better ways to solve things, because most times our emotions can make us do things we are not supposed to do if we sit and think about it properly.
For me, I don’t judge people based on things I see online. A short video clip cannot make me think I know everything that happen, what if the part we need to understand was not included in the video. There are times we might judge them blindly without the full context surrounding it. However I’m not saying that people should remain silent whenever something wrong happens, I believe everyone has the right to express their feelings, because speaking up can also draw more attention to an issue that may otherwise be ignored. And this can draw the attention of the right authorities to take the matter serious, because they know that the masses are now aware.
There’s something we need to understand here, there’s a difference between calling out the wrongdoing and taking matters into our hands. We can express our anger without becoming abusive and we can demand accountability without threatening them. Personally, I believe the internet community can demand the appropriate authorities to investigate the matter properly and if the person is guilty of the offense , they should face the consequences.
