The location with the highest concentration of lightning in the world is the state of Zulia, Venezuela; this distinction was recognized with a Guinness World Record in 2014.

The phenomenon occurs between April and November, when, over the course of 260 nights, a series of thunderstorms illuminates the skies of western Venezuela and parts of Colombia. Although the phenomenon has been studied for centuries, there are still aspects that science does not fully understand. Scientists continue to investigate the exact causes of the electrical activity in the Catatumbo region, as well as its global impact on the climate and the environment.
