Cyperus michelianus

Latin Name Observation Date Location
Cyperus michelianus Sep 16, 2026 Natore, Bangladesh

I love capturing the lives of small and strange plants in nature. Today, while walking by the water body near my house, I came across a beautiful small green plant on the wet ground. As you know, I don't have a DSLR or dedicated macro lens; my only hope is the smartphone in my pocket. So, without delay, I took out my phone from my pocket and took a few macro shots of this wonderful plant sprawling on the mud. Although it looks like an ordinary grass at first glance, the structure of its leaves and flower clusters are quite remarkable.

Scientific name The common scientific name of this green plant in the scientific world is Cyperus michelianus. Recently, researchers have found a subspecies of it, Cyperus michelianus subsp. pygmaeus, from the wetlands of Nepal and included it as a new record. Family and Genus According to the classification of biology, it is a member of the Cyperaceae family of the plant kingdom. They are basically called sedge or a type of special annual grass-like plant. In the scientific world, their genus or genus name is Cyperus.

Habitat and habitat

They are found quite well all over the world in terms of geographical distribution. They grow especially in humid regions of various countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Their main habitat is river banks, naturally formed rice fields or wet and damp clay where water has dried up in water bodies.

Food Being plants, they do not have to hunt for food from outside like other animals. They make their own food through the process of photosynthesis using sunlight. In addition, they absorb the necessary water and minerals from the bottom of the soil through their roots.

Reproduction Their main reproduction occurs through seeds. From February to April, small, flat, clustered flowers and fruits grow on their stems. After ripening, the fruits and seeds spread on the wet soil and give rise to new seedlings.

Benefits These small plants play a silent role in maintaining the balance of the environment and ecosystem around us. Their roots work well in preventing erosion of the banks of water bodies or soft soil. Moreover, they help in retaining soil moisture and creating shady shelter for microorganisms.

Disadvantages They do not have any harmful effects on humans or nature. However, if they grow undesirably in cropland or rice fields, they are considered a common weed, which does not cause any major problems except for removal.

I learned about them from various sites including iNaturalist, Wikipedia and Google.
