Other Ways of Seeing. / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Not all the photographs I take during the week can be placed within a series that has a common thread; some slip through the cracks of this purpose, and I set them aside in my archive while I think about where they might come to life.

No todas las fotografías que voy haciendo en la semana logro ubicar dentro de una serie que tenga un hilo conductor; algunas se me escapan de este propósito y las voy dejando en archivo mientras pienso dónde cobrarían vida.

And after a few days of moving them around and calling them “children of abuse,” I can begin to make sense of my story. 

Y después de algunos días de ponerlas de aquí para allá y llamarlas hijas del maltrato, puedo ir dándole un sentido a mi historia. 

The thing is, even these images—orphans of a central idea—when I look at them more closely and with intention, I begin to discover purposes in them that I hadn’t noticed before.

El caso es que, hasta estas imágenes huérfanas de una idea central, cuando las observo con más atención e intención, voy descubriendo en ellas propósitos que no había notado.

The point is that all of them are a fundamental part of my visual training and education as a street photographer. 

El tema es que todas ellas son parte fundamental de mi  formación y educación visual como fotógrafo callejero. 

When I look at them as a whole—and no longer as “children of abuse”—I realize which motifs recur in my images; in other words, they are my school.

Cuando las observo en su conjunto y ya no como hijas del maltrato, me percato de cuáles son los motivos que se repiten en mis imágenes; o sea, es mi escuela.

In the end, these are photos that don’t have any special appeal, but they are the ones that shape who I am and who I will become in this exciting world of street and documentary photography.

Al final, son fotos que no tienen un atractivo especial, pero sí son ellas las que le van dando forma a lo que soy y lo que seré en este apasionante mundo de la fotografía de calle y documental.
