Grandma Used to Say… / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Many thoughts cross my mind every time I’m doing street photography, and one of them is what my grandmother used to say: “Son, don’t hang your laundry out on the street where everyone can see it!” I feel like I can hear her saying it right now, and I tell myself: “Oh, Grandma, if only you could see how people do it here in Havana.

Son muchos los pensamientos que pasan por mi cabeza cada vez que estoy haciendo fotografía callejera, y uno de ellos son los dichos de mi abuela: "¡Niño, no cuelgues la ropa para la calle donde todos la ven!", me parece estar escuchándola ahora, y me digo: "Ay, abuela, si ves cómo las personas lo hacen aquí en La Habana.

Since most houses don’t have a backyard, people have to hang their laundry out to dry on the balconies, and it becomes quite a visual spectacle for passersby.

Las casas, al no tener la mayoría patio, tienen que poner a secar la ropa en los balcones, y se convierte en todo un espectáculo visual para los transeúntes. 

Whether it’s going-out clothes or underwear, it doesn’t really matter; the point is just to get it done.

Lo mismo ropa de salir que ropa interior, eso no importa mucho; el caso es resolver. 

For photographers like me, who tend to make the most of everything we see, all of this also becomes a story to tell.

Para los fotógrafos como yo, que solemos sacarle partido a todo lo que vemos, todo esto se convierte también en una historia que contar.

If my grandmother were seeing this, she’d say to me, “Look at that—how they’re hanging their underwear out on the street.” Anyway, times have changed, though this is already a popular tradition and will remain so for a long time to come. 

Si mi abuela estuviera viendo esto, me diría: Mira eso, cómo cuelgan sus calzones a la calle. En fin, sin otros tiempos, aunque esto ya es tradición popular y lo seguirá siendo por mucho tiempo.
