Where Has All the Life Gone? What Is Left?/ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

It’s 7:30 in the morning; I’m having a cup of coffee with my backpack packed, and I’m ready to head out. Nothing is the same anymore; I remember that a year ago the city was full of life, but today it seems like part of it has died—even the colors have faded.

Son las 7:30 de la mañana, me tomo un café con la mochila preparada y ya estoy listo para salir a la calle. Ya nada es igual; recuerdo que un año atrás la ciudad estaba llena de vida, pero hoy parece que ha muerto parte de ella, hasta los colores se han desgastado.

From a distance, people watch me, but no one asks, “Why are you taking pictures?” As the saying goes, to each his own—mine is walking around the city taking photos.

Desde la distancia, la gente me observa, pero nadie pregunta: «¿Para qué haces fotos? Como dice el refrán, cada loco con su tema, el mío es caminar por la ciudad fotografiando.

Every so often, a street vendor approaches me: “Want to buy something?” he asks. These days, there are many who make a living this way.

A cada rato se me acerca un vendedor ambulante: «¿Quieres comprar algo? Pregunta, en estos días son muchos los que se buscan la vida de esta manera.

As I walk, I think, reflect, and try to make sense of the chaos around me, all while documenting it as faithfully as possible.

Mientras camino, voy pensando, reflexionando y tratando de entender el caos que me rodea, y a la vez lo documento de la forma más fiel posible. 

After a while, it’s time for a break—a much-needed one, that’s for sure. Thankfully, the heat isn’t too intense. I look for a place that serves coffee, recharge my energy, and carry on.

Al rato, es mi descanso, necesario, eso sí. Menos mal que no es tan fuerte el calor. Busco un punto de venta donde haya café, recargo fuerzas y continúo. 

And the story repeats itself over and over every time I go out to take photos. Maybe I shouldn’t take things so personally and should suffer through them less, but it’s inevitable. Anyone who knew this city in its heyday wouldn’t believe it if they saw what it’s like today.

Y la historia se repite una y otra vez cada vez que salgo a fotografiar. Quizás no debería tomarme las cosas tan a pecho y sufrirlas menos, pero es inevitable. Quien conoció esta ciudad en sus mejores tiempos no se lo creería al ver lo que es hoy.

For my part, I continue my work as a photographer and historian, documenting everything in my path and holding onto the hope that the future will bring something better. 

Por mi parte, continúo mi trabajo de fotógrafo e historiador, documentando todo a mi paso y con fe en que el futuro traerá algo mejor.
