Today, on World Mental Health Day, I find myself thinking about how much people talk about this topic, yet how rarely someone can truly put themselves in the shoes of those who carry a burden so heavy that they have thoughts of no longer wanting to exist. It is a sensitive issue, not only because it is something that may be increasingly affecting the global population due to various factors—whether personal, social, or economic.
As a society, we are expected to be doing fine, regardless of whether we can handle what daily life brings or if we actually have the necessary resources and support to make the crucial changes needed to lead a "normal" life. It seems to me that everyone wants to be healthy, but in such an obsessive way that we almost fall into the trap of not knowing how to take a break from it all. And when I talk about taking a break, I mean connecting with real life, with what we have around us, rather than staying trapped behind a screen.
It feels as though terms like "empathy" and "mental health" are overused, yet very few people actually give them real importance or apply them in their daily lives. When we see others going through a hard time, even if we don't know them, we can be of help—perhaps by asking if we can offer support, or simply by standing by their side in silence. However, today there seems to be a greater focus on wanting to arrive first, be the best, or be superior to others. It is okay to strive for self-improvement, but this should not come attached to the idea of stepping on others just to achieve our goals.
There are many factors that deeply affect people's mental health: some we can change, and others we cannot. I believe there should be more public assistance for people who truly need it, especially if there is a risk to life or a severe issue requiring specialized care. Sadly, the world is advancing only technologically; emotional well-being is left at the bottom of our priorities, which is why we encounter people along our journey who leave much to be desired.
As a student and as someone who has also gone through difficult times, I would never judge anyone's pain or emotions, because I know what it feels like to be struggling and not know how to ask for help or who to trust. Humanity needs a major shift—not just in terms of aesthetics or what people wish to display superficially. We also need each person to reflect on their own mistakes and battles so that we don't hurt ourselves or others along life's journey.
I feel fortunate to have people who help me see life in a more beautiful way, but I know that many do not have that support system or pillar to help them keep going. I think everyone should at least have the opportunity to receive help without feeling like they are spending a fortune on a single consultation or on medications essential for their stability. It is a vast topic, but I feel a true shift in awareness will only happen when we experience a situation close to home—one that wakes us up and makes us realize that this can happen to anyone.
Remember to surround yourselves with people who make you feel heard, and keep in mind that a bad day, or even a bad week, does not mean a life destined for eternal suffering.
