Hello movie and TV lovers! I hope you are doing very well. The adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s book, The Love Hypothesis, recently came out, and I was really looking forward to watching it because I’ve read and heard great reviews about the book, even though I haven’t had the chance to read it yet. I like stories that get adapted into movies because they generate excitement and, at the same time, a sense of nervousness to see if the story stays faithful to the book or undergoes noticeable changes. The movie is a romance, and while it's not one of my favorite genres, some romance films are truly worth watching. So, I invite you to read my review of The Love Hypothesis 💘.

The story begins with the main characters' first encounter, though it isn't until two years later that they truly get to know each other. Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart) is a young woman passionate about her career in science, driven by a life-altering event that led her to study medicine. In her environment is her best friend Anh, who is also a science enthusiast and shares her days with Olive. There is a very close bond between them—they are more than friends—and Olive understands this in a very literal way because she likes a guy, but this guy is in love with her friend.

Things escalate, and to prevent her friend from missing the chance to be with this guy from their department, Olive decides to fake a relationship. This ends up leading to an unexpected kiss and a fake dating arrangement between Olive and Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman). Adam is a professor at the university with a reputation for being the worst human being on Earth due to his harsh demands on students. This relationship is quite odd since they are completely different, but somehow it feels sweet to see their connection grow.

I can't say if it turned out exactly like the book, but it is a lovely movie that doesn't force a relationship or chase a fairy-tale perfection. I really liked that the actors had chemistry in their own unique way, which reflects throughout the film, especially from the middle to the end. What curious me the most was learning from my sister that the lead actor is the author's real-life husband—I found that quite unusual, and it made the story feel even more genuine. Furthermore, the setting and the soundtrack matched the mood of the story perfectly.

I also found it very interesting that the plot wasn't just a typical romance story. Olive has a strong foundation and a higher motivation driving her to find better treatments or a cure for pancreatic cancer. She is truly committed to her mission—she feels it deeply and shows it, especially after going through an unpleasant and appalling experience with one of the professors in the department. Her reactions and decisions throughout that felt completely right to me.

Yes, it is a lovely story—one of those unexpected movies that leaves you feeling like you watched something with a message beyond romance: a message of true friendship, of a deep need to find one's inner purpose, and of how we are constantly changing. It is an enjoyable film with palpable chemistry between the actors, and I think it's worth watching. The book must be great as well, and I’d love to read it at some point. I hope you give this story a chance and see past the romance to appreciate its messages about staying true to yourself and to the people you care about. 🫶🏽

Spanish Version
