This is one hidden gem of Japan. Miyajama island is very famous in Japan for the Itsukushima Shrine and the floating torri gates of the shrine, whenever you do search of this island you will find pics of the shrine and the torri gates but not even one picture of this shrine. While doing my research I had come across these cave pictures on Instagram. It looked very fascinating to me, so I had decided to visit the place.
After finishing our visit to Itsukushima shrine, following the google map, I reached the site, but there were multiple paths and the map was not exactly able to guide me to my destination. This cave is near the Daishon temple, which is one of the oldest temples in Miyajama. The caves are located behind the temples, but it is confusing reaching there. The map shows the side path which takes up the hill. I took that path and kept moving up, but there was no sight of the cave. There were some people climbing down, I checked with them if they had spotted any cave but there was none. I climbed down and started searching again.
At one point I gave up, thinking this is some misguide on Insta. I visited the Daishon temple and there are other small temples also around it. My son was moving around quickly and then he gave me a shout, asking me to come where he was, and guess what, it was the caves. I was so thrilled and also at the same time mesmerized by the beauty. All the effort of searching it was worth. Because it's not famous, there are barely any people there. The cave is in one corner, so even people visiting the Daishon temple can easily miss it. Since we were desperately in search of it, we were exploring almost every corner of the place.
Inside the cave what to expect? They are not huge caves; it's one big rock opening where there is a shrine. The beauty of the caves is the 100s of lanterns that are lit up. Since it's a cave it's dark inside and the cave gets lit up with these lanterns. These caves looked like they are being used for meditation purpose. I was there inside for almost 15 minutes; the energy was so god that I did not feel like coming out of the place. No crowd, no one to sell anything here, just few people admiring the beauty of this place. That was it.
